Oh,hell. It's his car? Write off the storage fees as a bad deal, load it up on your trailer, take it to his house and dump it off. Then it's his problem, at his house. ANYTHING else is only going to drag things out, cost you more time and money and still leave a bad taste in your mouth. Get it over with. Now.
I just went through the same thing. Two years and no money to work on the car. Once I couldn't keep it inside for free any more, he lead me on a while then quit communicating. I texted him and said "it's outside, better come get it" He came in 3 hours and took it. I would deliver it if that's an option. You wouldn't want to have any bad feelings lingering by doing the wrong thing. Good luck!
What 5window said. What did the guy pay for it? A body like that (just the body) recently sold here for about $3,000.
I've stored cars twice for people. one guy never came and gave me the rent, I had to go get it. another guy paid on time, but I needed the space back after about 6 months of his 2 month storage and every month it was the same story "I'll get it next month". 3 months later I told him this is your last month, and on the first of next month it will be outside. guess he thought I was kidding. I called him the last weekend of the month and he starts arguing with me about it. it was out in the parking lot on the 1st. orange with white stripes 1969 Z/28 sitting outside in an industrial area. suddenly he found the time to come get it.
I still say I live close enough to take it off your hands. As soon as the new engine, transmission and rear end are under the '54, I'll be looking for something to play with so I don't do something stupid and tear into the chevy again to the point that it's off the road. When the T was on the road, I could park the chevy and figure out how I'm going to do the front end, then get to putting a four speed in it. I could rotate what's being wrenched on and what's being driven. You get rid of a pain in the ****, I get a very cool toy.
Your friend is a lame ***. If he does not want to work on that kick *** car take it over! I've been storing a OT car for a good friend for 4yrs, haven't seen him in 3. Its mine!!!
Sounds like you're basically free storage until his hand is forced to do something about it. F**K him. Drop it on his doorstep and enjoy the garage space. He'll find time to sell it it fast enough if he thinks he's gonna be out on his ****. You're not losing a friend you're gaining a workshop!
If it bothers you to have it in your way and you have a truck and trailer, just drop it off in his driveway and drive away. It sounds like he is close enough to you that the time taken to do this will be far less frustrating than dwelling on what to do. I wouldn't even knock on his door to try and talk to him.
Send him written notice to come get it and then make him a lowball offer to take it off his hands and resell for a profit or part it out. Bottom line is the guy is not a friend. Take a lemon and make lemon-aid.
Seems pretty simple to me. You have a truck and trailer ! Why don't you just move it to his place and leave it for him to deal with ?!
No sense in getting hostile with him. Get a friendly message to him asking if he wants to sell it. If he takes the bait, buy it from him for a distressed price minus the storage fees. If he says no, then you open the conversation asking what he plans on doing with it and that you need the space back.
I have seen this scenario happen way to many times.... I would not have let him leave it at my house, if he was gonna work on it, he wasn't brining his whole tool box over, so of course he would be using mine. Not to mention electricity, and not to mention responsibility if it or something get stolen.... Your hands are tide, and its most definitely a life lesson.... Meet up with him over a beer, and work it out is all you can doo, or tow it over to his house and chaulk it up..... If he does sell it to you, make it cash, and ***le exchange/ transffer, no if and or buts, cuz your business with him has already gone south, avoid business in the future for sure...
Wow i can't beileve how many of you guys say load it up and drop it at his house. What a dumb thing that would be. like other have said you are a LONG ways to owning this car! clean out your garage and organize it, put the rod back inside. he's not a true friend, and he's not interested in the hot rod!!! in another year he will owe you more than its worth and you send him a letter, stateing he has 30 days to come up with the agread amount PLUS storage fees!!! it now belongs to you!!! P.S. do***ent your contacts with him, organize your "bill" get smart
Nope. I don't know the laws in Washington state where the OP is from, but there doesn't appear to be anything in writing. With a he said/I said situation, it's bound to be long and involved and bad feelings and court fees and time just dragging on. There are other cars and better friends out there. Again. It's going to be better all around to just cut all the **** and wipe the slate clean. I don't know if the "no ***le" thing makes it harder or easier, but it just slays me that people buy cars without the ***le and then don't get a clear ***le before they do anything else.
At least your friend left something cool at your house. This mess has been at my house for over a year and a half and hasn't been touched in over a year. The difference I suppose is my guy is a real friend and he helps me out all the time, I'm not stressed for space so it doesn't bother me. I do hate having to constantly remind him to keep the yard work up around them (that was the deal) but what the hell, like I said we're friends
Just contact him and tell your place is sold and you're moving out. Come and get it before the next person takes it to the "crusher" [I know that's a dirty word here ]
20 years ago i had a situation like that, except the car was a late model rice burner, guy never showed up, wouldn't answer calls, or messages. so i parked it on the nearest bridge and threw the keys in the river. cops had it towed within 15 minutes. never heard a word. in your case, i would send him a registered letter informing him to contact you to work out the storage fee, the removal of the vehicle, or the sale/gift to you etc..
My thought would be to rent a storage unit that it would just fit into (the cheapest/most economical one I could find). Hopefully less than $100 a month. Tell him it's gone and he would have to pay your rent & the storage unit fee as well. Movin/on
bury it ! then call King George and the Ringmaster of Diggers to search the backyard hot rod treasures ! Bam ! Hey look what we found buried in your yard. Hot Rod juice in the hole !
