Can anyone ID this 9 in.? The only measurement I have is 58 in. inside to inside backing plates. It appears to have the large bearings. It has the typical 9 in. hump but no dimples or drain plug on the rear. There is a # 28 on the 3rd member near the bottom bolts. D2SW 2 is on the 5 bolt support plate. A # 26 on the face of the carrier along with a large M enclosing a c within a C and there is a circle with the #'s 61357 arranged clockwise in the circle. I also found the # 321 on the 3rd member. ASAP I will clean it up and dis***emble it. Some say it may be an early Bronco. As for now any help is appreciated. Jim

If the wheel bolt pattern is 5-on-5-1/2", then it is likely a first generation Bronco. D2 may be 1972. Good score.

Sounds like an early '70s Ford F-100/150 based on width and 5 x 5 1/2" bolt circle.

Early Bronco's were in the 50 inch range inside Backing plate to inside backing plate.. Pickup was 58" inside..

I wouldn't trust that for identifying spline count. I've seen plenty of 28 spline axles with the 2 hole ends. Trucks went to 31 spline sometime in the late 70's, so that improves the odds for this particular axle.

With the spring pads on top, it's certainly a truck or van axle. The shock mounts are not early Bronco though. EB shocks are mounted to the rear, outboard of the springs.

Oooh! Read that wrong. Yeah, too wide for the Bronco. Pickup then.

That housing where it kind of tapers down form the center into the tubes is the newer style. I agree it looks like a 70-80's pickup based on width and appearance.

OK Guys, Here's the latest. The right drum is rusted to the brake pads, so I haven't freed it up yet. The good news; I pulled the left axle. It's the large bearing type and is a 31 spline axle. The plot thickens. The only #'s I can read so far on the ring gear are; what looks like a small w 4205 B, CC43 and 6L13, I think. Any ideas? Jim

It's a Ford pickup axle ***embly..............from early/mid '70s thru about '82 or so, when they switched to 8.8 axles full size pickups.....

You already know enough to buy parts for it as there are not that many variations. 9" ring gear, big bearings, 31 spline...........you have the brake sizes.....not much else to it.

Well I finally sprung the "pumpkin". With 37 t on the ring gear and 9 t on the pinion, she's a 4:11. She's not stamped such but teeth don't lie. I still don't have an exact year but as someone said, I have enough info to order parts. The drums are 11 in. with 2 1/4 in. brakes. She measures 60 1/2 in. mounting flange to mounting flange w/large bearings and 31 spline axles. The spring plates are a little over 45 in. c to c and shock mounts are 34 1/2 in. I don't know limited slip or such but will appreciate any ID help. Jim

That's a limited slip. The ring gear bolts are sunk into the cover. An open is flat around the bolts, and the bolts have larger heads.

    Open on left.

[IMG]Wow!!! I lucked out for $100. I'd rather have something in the 2:73-3:00 range for fuel economy but I'll try it a while. Running a SBC, 700r4 or 4L60e with this 9 in. should be an acceptable combination.
