Well, This weekends efforts have revealed 2 of what I think to be Continental quarter midget motors. Kinda difficult to see exactly what they are but I have two and a box of parts. I appologise for not posting pix now but it is sunday night here and Pix just aren't going to happen. I don't know about these but I am sure about what they are, well sorta. I will take and post pics tomorrow. Other treasures too, including teens windshield thiat isn't ford, but pretty cool and a bunch of motorcycle parts from the 30's n 40's. Good to be me this weekend Pics tomorrow I promis! I know how tough this crowd is when it comes to that! Cheers! Iron deficiency here is fixed for now!
curious to see your continental parts. i picked up an early quarter midget awhile back. im looking for the gear box for the direct drive, solt i guess. the car i have is all original but somebody converted it to a clutch setup. would like to put it back to direct drive.
They were Continentals before the Detroit Engine Co. bought the design/rights. They became "Decos" after that. The neatest thing about them is the external breaker point system. Unlike all the other 1 lung engines that powered lawnmowers and other equipment, you didn't have to disassemble the flywheel to regap points.j
well, here are the pix! Not sure what I have here, they have 7 bolt heads, look like some racy stuff to me. I've not had time to really have a good look at 'em, may be later. I just got the radiator back for my A roadster and am finishing up the asembly of it's B motor....some things are just more important than others! Cheers!
They are certainly Continental 1/4 midget engines modified for racing. The AA may be a clue. That was the top class, 8ci,alky,almost no stock or unmodified parts.
Whenever someone asks me about quarter midgets and engines I tell them to contact Doug Schiller 39 Sandcastle Drive Port Lavaca, Texas 77979 His phone number is 361-552-5731 He has been involved building quarter midgets since the 1950's and he makes all kinds of parts for them. Hope he can help you. Tell him you got his name and number from Jim Hill
This Penrose reduction gear is RARE!! Old "Penn" had a lawnmower/small engine shop in Lynwood in the 50's. He was one of the first to start "hopping up" Continentals for early 1/4 midget guys. His stuff was kind of crude, and when Evans, Solt, and Bose came along with quality parts, he faded out. I bet you never see another one of these.
Hi all, I know this thread is old, but I thought I'd try it anyway. I picked up a Continental AU10 at a swap meet last weekend and I'd like to find out more information about it. I tried calling Doug Schiller, whose info is posted above, but that phone number is disconnected. Here's the info from the plate on the engine: Model AU10 Spec. No. B407578 Serial 535653 On the inside edge of the flywheel is Y11214B and the carb is a Carter Model N. Is there a way to determine when this engine was made and does anyone know about manuals or other info? Thanks in advance for any info! Dean Meltz
