What media have you used on your car? The quarters and doors won't get blasted, they're already stripped and straight as an arrow so they will just get DA action. Looking mainly to blast EDP from the new floor pan and trunk floor and clean up the firewall and inside the body. Any recommendations on media? I have a small commercial blasting rig available.
Seems it's soda for paint and sand for rust. But be sure to read this thread FIRST! Especially concerning the decklid. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=658008&highlight=sandblast+test
in a nutshell, they did a test on a '55 Chevy decklid. Sandblasted at low pressure. The thing still warped. The realization was that on flat panels, no matter how careful you are, there's still gonna be damage. And it's not from "heat buildup" as many believe...there is no heat buildup when sandblasting. It's the peening and stress relieving of the metal.
I read that post about the deck lid, that's why I'm blasting my car myself. I don't want to take any chances. I got a reasonable quote for doing the blasting work, but the more the guy talked the more I realized the potential for disaster.
I had my 58 Chevy wagon blasted with plastic media with no problems at all a few years ago. Last summer I had a hood soda blasted and spent darn near as much as I did for the whole wagon! It turned out alright but it was a little pricey!
aircraft stripper and power wash. If you get tired of blasting give us a call. We only blast cars and have a ton of HAMBers that can attest to the quality and care.
I see cars being blasted all the time. Most of the time the large flat panels will be taped off so the blaster knows not to hit em. Hand sand the rest after blasting. To much damage can be done to risk it. BTW this is what I see at a company that has been doing it for 20 or so years.
Hey man, I need the front fenders and and splash panel blasted. They are in really weak 100% original paint and are 100% rust free except for really light surface rust areas. (Basically, about as nice as used '55 fenders can be) No filler or layers of paint, at all. Just a light clean up blast, not really stripping of old paint. Approx. what would it cost to blast the front fenders and splash pan? (Not the hood)
I have a friend in P.A. that does blasting. Last year or so he starting using crushed gl*** for projects like this. He said it works very well because he can turn the air pressure way down and still take off surface rust without warpage.
Front splash shield would take all of 5 minutes. Fenders have a lot more surface area and would depend on how much surface rust there is and undercoating. You may be lucky but every tri five we've done had really thick coating like z-bark. How about this, Monday we have a super clean 55 going in the booth and I'll let you know exactly how long the fenders take. Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk 2
I see that you said very light surface rust, my guess is the outside of each fender would take about 5 to 10 minutes. Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk 2
We decided not to blast the whole car, it's actually too nice and doesn't have layers of paint to remove.. We also tested the EDP and we're gonna leave it on the car. Lacquer thinner didn't even phase it.
Have used plastic media to blast maybe 30-35 cars never came back with a warped panel. The company that blasted the cars also uses it on aircraft wings per the wings manufacturer. The plastic actually does remove a lot of rust but not so great on filler unless you want to spend an extra hour or 2. Usually going to cut those sections out anyway.
Guys, Thanks for the suggestions. We used crushed gl*** media and my $90 (with coupon) Harbor freight blaster and it turned out awesome. Only took about one afternoon and got everything super clean. We just tried the blaster on a whim and it worked great, so we did the rest of it including dash, firewall, trunk lid, door jams, etc.
