With the tilt lever on it? I believe the lever comes off with the stock Cadillac wheel. Maybe a Corvette wheel would look sporty? P.S. I would not put this in a hot rod, it's for a 70s model truck, but I had to ask here because I know someone here knows.
Some problems putting just any wheel on the tilt telescoping col. Chevrolet trucks did not have that option. Have a picture?
It's up in the attic, no pictures at the moment. I figured the GM colums were somewhat interchangeable in the 70s-80s-90s. I just wanted to make it easier to get in and out of the truck.
He drinks Natty light... how much more of a diet you want.. Hell he even gave a up Tony's creole seasoning because of the salt.. I seemed to remember that column came out a a suburban? but that doesnt sound right. Tbird?
Right-on Fred! But seriously, does it have the ignition/lock on it? The one in my Vette does and the telescopic action is initiated by turning the horn button. Also, the later columns are larger diameter, not sure what year they changed, though.
I have a T Bird Swing Away column and wheel too. This is a cadillac, key on the column, tele lever is in a recess on top of the steering wheel. If a Corvette wheel won't fit, or something else cool isn't available, it'll probably stay in my attic for ages...unless I get an old Eldorado...
FYI, there is a repro 40 ford wheel out there with a hub sized ans splined for GM columns. edit - Limeworks
If the steering wheel is held on with 6 screws then it is probably the same as a Corvette. But I don't know that as fact. There are adapters advertised for Cadillac wheels but not common and a little expensive.
I'm thinking the tele lever will cause a problem. I guess it's not worth worrying about, just thought I might get a quick yes or no.
The adapter kits and shit aren't going to work on the tele column since the tele lever is integrated into the wheel, and the Corvette tele wheels won't fit onto the Caddy column (as mentioned, they telescope by spinning the center button). The only way I could think of doing it is to cut the Caddy steering wheel away until you just had the center hub, then graft a different wheel onto it, or try to cut a slot into the bell shaped back part of a Grant wheel adapter for the tele lever to poke out of. I have never once seen one of the late 60's or early 70's Caddy tilt/tele columns installed in a car with a different steering wheel, and the original one is damn ugly. I have a feeling it'd be damn difficult, if not, someone would have figured it out by now.
It can be done. I have a friend who is a HAMBer make a horn button that allowed me to use the telescopic feature on the Cadillac column. I used a 60s Corvette style wheel and my buddy used my drawing to machine an aluminum adapter. The whole knob is turned to push the rod down inside the column. It has been 30 years so details are not to sharp anymore. Basically we replaced the lever with a non functioning horn button to lock and unlock the telescoping portion. It's not impossible but not easy either.
The Corvette wheel may work. I'm thinking the tele on the Corvette was adjusted by twisting the center hub and then the Caddy has that lever you are talking about. The lever is actually a ring with an arm that is attached to the top of the tele lock with a few screws...5 or 6 maybe. I haven't tried it, but maybe you could get away with just about any old splined wheel and adapt the center to twist the tele lock like the Corvette?
Maybe I should ask on a Corvette forum. But that would probably be like asking here if a Honda engine would fit a '32 three window!
