I'm installing a V8 in my Chrysler street rod and want to keep the drivetrain all Mopar . What years of Dodge Dakota truck , 2 wheel drive V6 engine , 5 speed transmissions will fit up to a Mopar 318 LA V8 engine . I have an aluminum bellhousing with linkage and a cast iron bellhousing with slave cylinder from a Power Wagon Truck . Thanks
Late 90s, If you can fine one, get the NV 3500 from a V8 Dakota. The 3500 can take a little more HP than the AX 15. I grabbed one from a 99 5.2 sport.
I personally like the AX-15 better. It is quiet (the NV-3500/3550 sound like a coffee can full of rocks in neutral). It is easier to get replacement parts for and it seems to hold up well. I have one in an OT wrangler that gets abused often and has never let me down In either case I reccomend an aftermarket "short throw" shifter. It makes it feel much more like a car trans than the long throws of a truck. If you plan on more than 300hp check out rock land standard gear. They have modded AX 15 transmissions that can handle more power.
The bell for the AX15 is specific to the AX15...no interchange with anything else. The newer NV trans are 1-piece...no seperate bell. You will also need the 143 tooth flywheel from the 3.9 or 5.2 The Jeep guys beat the hell out of the AX15 and keep going. Check my web site for some additional trans ID info: http://www.qualityengineeredcomponents.com/?page_id=69 .
Then you need to use an old 4 Mopar 4 speed ,the NV 3500 and AX15 are not made by Mopar As said above,Jeep guys consider the Japanese built AX15 to be superior to the NV3500.It can handle reasonable V8 power. The first gear ratios on both are rather low for performance use with a V-8 in a lighter car.
