I was on my home from the Lone Star Roundup and decided to take a detour to the area east of Dallas to visit my old pal Doc (blasted on the Hamb) who had invited me to stop several years ago. It was not easy to fine his secluded country estate some 40 minutes from Dallas and the GPS made it even more difficult. But soon me and my trusty sidekick Ron were turning into the driveway where Doc had left the gate open for us...
Doc and his dogs were waiting for us and he with his Texas drawl he said:
"Paul, it's good to see you and I'm sorry I missed your call last night...you see me and the wife were watching "Easy Rider" and you must have called during the part where "Steppenwolf" was playing "Born to be wild" and I had the volume cranked up real high.....even my dogs were digging it man..."

We shook hands and it was great to see my friend again...

He took us on a tour of his acreage and it was much like a wooded park. In fact he said they have nicknamed their back yard the "Poetry State park." We headed for the pool area first which is separate from the house or shop. My sidekick Ron is in charge of the public pool at Salina, KS so he and Doc shared some tips on that kind of stuff.

Then we walked back over to the shop and it was a very clean and welcoming place to visit...
I really liked the seating area around the wood stove. Doc obviously knows what is important in life.

I headed right to the Casey coupe which he purchased from the estate of well loved Hamb member Collin Casey who p***ed away at a young age a few years ago. The car fired up instantly at the touch of the ignition ****on and the flathead sounded great...

Unlike many of you I never met Casey but I had visited with him by PM on this message board. I can just tell you that his old car has a good home now where it is loved and appreciated.

Soon his pal Robert showed up to visit and I would describe him as a forever young surfer who knows how to enjoy life....this would also describe Doc. They are two of a kind.

Robert was driving his Ford panel truck that he had bought in San Diego and drove back home to Texas a few years back. It has an inside rack for surfboards and he along with Doc and Mrs. Doc enjoy windsurfing on a nearby lake as well.

And I looked over the 55 Nomad that was sitting outside some more and it was nice. Doc said it is a good driver.

Inside the shop was a very cool 1937 Graham Cavalier sedan which was just oozing with art deo style and design. I loved it...

While at the LSR show in Austin I had met a pair of Hamb members from the Springdale. Arkansas area whose Buick car had incurred perhaps fatal engine trouble and Doc had extended his help and generosity to them and got them to a car rental place where they could continue on to the show in Austin. I forgot their names but they were friendly and I liked them. Here is the cool but broken down Buick and I hope they get it fixed soon.

Sadly, it was time for me and Ron to head north to Kansas on this Sunday afternoon and we had to tell out pals goodbye. It sure was a fun place to visit and I'm glad we took the time instead of just hurrying home....
    Thanks Doc !
    You are the best...
and Robert, you take care man....good to meet you.

I forgot to show one last photo showing Doc's ponytail which has grown alot since last time I saw him. I am jealous to say the least due to my own lack of hair...

Thanks for the tour PF! Doc is as good a steward of the Casey Coupe as you could get. In addition to being good buds, they're both cut from the same cloth with a p***ion for their cars. All of us Texans were thrilled when he was able t get the car and keep it from becoming a Street Rod for an Attorney (or worse)!
Gotta admit, I had first thought Doc had become a victim of Iden***y theft when I saw the pic of his shaven face (IMPOSTOR!), but after a little photo shop with a majic marker, I'm relieved to report it is indeed "The Man"!
(any tips on getting marker off a monitor screen?).
Thanks for sharing the tour, and we missed 'ya at the LSRU, Doc!

Paul your are a true amb***ador of our hobby.
It made our week when you and Ron showed up for sure. And you flatter us with your thread of our humble abode. Next time you come out I promise to take you guys to the best mom @ pop burger joint in Texas and they have the best home made chocolate pie.
Love to read your articles, it's like we where there, lol.

And JB "seatex" bud, you crack me up man. Felt-tip on the screen, lol. Love ya man.

And if any wayward sols end up in north Texas you will always be welcome out at our place. Stop in and take a load off.

The surf boards, we have been surfing and windsurfing for close to 30 yrs. I build most of my own boards and love to chase hurricanes. So some Texans do get there feet wet, lol

Got to meet Doc at the Texas Thaw and ride in the coupe.. That flathead certainly surprised me. I always thought they were pretty much docile.

Doc's a real cool dude. Glad I got to meet him.

Poetry Rod Shop in the house...what whaaaaaaat. :D
Good people for sure, here is a pic of my lady 9 months pregnant with Docs wifes panel. They were more than happy to let my wife crawl in and day dream about having one of her own some day. My son was born less than a month after this pic, I guess you could say it was the first hot rod he was ever in. ;)
edit: daaang its been awhile, my son is pushing 6 years old now!

    Thanks guys for the flowers.
I think 90% of the hotrodders are just like us and enjoy spreading the hotrod love. Hopefully we will see you buds at Little River drags in a week.
