I'm looking forward to paint my wheels and would like to find out a good shade of red. I've seen dark red wheels which I like, but don't know the code for one. My wheels are 1940 Ford. I hope someone can help me with color code.
Check out www.tcpglobal.com they have an auto color library online. Jaguar had a nice wine color that some have called ox blood. Jag called it richeloue red, I think it was on 1969 models.
I have always been a fan of the early Volkswagon color called Bourdeaux Red. I believe it is an early 50's color. Here is a pic, hope it helps.
1940 Ford maroon would be optimal for these rims. Do you have the color code for it? Vw red looks cool also. My model A is British Airforce gray with burgundy red leather interior. Can't wait to get the wheels painted. Just picked them from sandblasting and I will pick the paint up tomorrow.
That TCP place lists the '40 Ford Maroons as Mandarin and Garnet. I think Mandarin is the more common one. They don't have any codes, but they will mix and ship. Don't know about the cost shipping to Finland though.
I checked the colors from TCP and Mandarin looks to be extremely dark in my monitor. I suppose I will pick one of these up, 1940 Ford colors Garnet Maroon M14073 or VW 1957 colors 50549 Garnet red. I suppose I need to get paint mixed here in Finland, actually I would like to get it before weekend so I can get the wheels painted. Thank you all for help, I appreciate your help.
I'm with you on that one. In fact, I think VW and porsche nailed it on their colors ghost the 50s and 60s.
This is interesting: maroon paints... Useful if you want to get modern brand matches for maroon paints. For all the historic paints being mentioned like "80 - 82 corvette dark claret red" is there somewhere I can view examples on the internet?
Bought some primer and paint, I hope the paint is even close, they did not have that old maps. I'll post some pictures later.
There's a thread on here somewhere where someone mixed 1 part gloss red with 1 part flat black and came up with a really nice satin ox blood.
Ilari, please post the code so we can get this mixed if we want. Then the next guy won't have to search for some unknown code, and not be sure of what color will actually be in the can. Thanks.
I will check it and post it later. I don´t have original Ford color which I could compare this to, but it sure looks like one of those old paints. Color was listed in truck paint codes, so it was also cheaper.
I got my model A running this weekend. Took some pictures outside the garage. Wheels look great. I was planning to use original type of pinstripes, but now I´m getting regrets.
Ilari, looks like you've found a good selection for your car. The only thing I'd mention is that, monitor reproduction aside, your color choice looks more like a burgundy color rather than an ox blood or maroon. The difference being that the burgundy has a bit of a blue tone to it, the others are somewhat muddier with a slightly brownish tone. Someone above mentioned TCP Global. I had gotten some of their "Burgundy" house mix, no reference to any manufacturer number or code. It appears to be very similar to the color you ended up with. Monitors reproduce color differently so that's a factor, and as experienced painters have learned, reds can have a certain amount of transparency so the base color of the previous paint, or primer can shade the color as well. I shot the TCP Burgundy today and this is how it looks in full light. It has a light grey primer underneath. In indirect light or cloudy light it gets just a bit darker.
I´m pretty satisfied with the color, if fits to the gray body paint nicely. It´s different from my interior color, but fits nicely to it also. Wheel paint tint seems to vary a lot about the light conditions, it looks darker in real life than in this picture. Your wheel look awesome, that´s what I had in mind, and I ended up close enough. My wheels are not as well painted as yours are.
Just a color sample I found awhile back, "Red Wine" available in powdercoat or PPG color line. I used both in this, the tank needing attention of bodywork so it was painted.
