I am new to all this. I just picked up a 1954 chevy 210 post that had been sitting for six years. I pulled the tank and had someone clean it after trying to get it started. I replaced the fuel pump and put a new glass filter so I could see what impurities were still around and I used a mighty vac to clear any rust and sludge in the fuel line from tank to pump. Fuel looked super clean. Got it running though starter needs work or replacing and took it for a drive. Ended up having to take the filter off twice and clean in order to get home after a five mile drive. My question is, could this be my fault from not clearing line (about twelve ounces of fuel before it was clear) or did I just pay someone who didn't really clean my tank. Third option, they cleaned it but it suffered from flash rust. Possibility since it took the guy two weeks to get it back to me, him saying he coated the inside twice and it took awhile to dry. Being new to this, any suggestions. Should I use the mighty vac and clear my fuel line again or am I looking at pulling a full fuel tank and taking it to a radiator shop?
Keep cleaning the filter tell the partials stop or take it to the radiator shop for a good cleaning. Have them coat and seal the the tank and you'll be good to go. The radiator shop can fix any leaks the tank my have, to put it simple it's good insurance. CRUISER
i have 3 1954 Chevy Bell Airs, did this to. I baught a new after market gas tank, flushed the lines at a radiator shop. put a new plastic filter, befor the fuel pump. also to see any inpuritys. fuel pump ok. Put a round glass tube filter before the Carburator, incase anything gets by brfotr yhr Carburator. Rebuilt the Carburator. Good as new.
milagro 33 I took my 53 chevy tank to a mom and pop radiator shop. Same problem; lots of fine rust. smokin: when you put your glass bowl fuel filter in, did you mount it directly at the intake of the carborator? Im working on this now and cant descide where to splice it in.
ok, the way to start, is at the back to front. Take care of the gas tank first, then hhave the line that goes from the gas tank to the fuel pump. So that everything is clean from the gas tank to the fuel pump. second make sure the fuel pump is clean, then from the fuel pump to the carburator line is dipped at a radiator shop. Then start the car, if it is mising or popping, or coughing it could be the carburator needs to be rebuilt. At last, check the timimng make sure it is timed, Let me know what happens. Give me a call if you like, (818)492-0780 Frank
Thanks Frank. I pulled the starter and its getting rebuilt. Should have it in a couple of days. My plan is to run the car as much as I can for a week or two and see if the rust particles subside and just keep cleaning the filter. If it continues after that then I will pull the tank and the fuel line and take them to a radiator shop. I will definitely call if I hit a snag. I am worried that the teeth on the fly wheel may be why the car is hard to start and pulling that out may be beyond my ability and tools.
Got the starter in and it turns over like a champ. So nicely I am no longer contemplating converting it over to 12 volts. It feels really good to have accomplished this with my rookie abilities. Plan on getting up really early next weekend and driving it one last time to see if the rust goes away and if not i will then pull the gas tank.
did you have the gas line cleaned out? if you just change the gas tank, and not clean the lines. the lines can plug things up too. talk to you soon, happy things are working for you.
the glass bowl, is 5" from the intake, and 5" from the carburator. out of harms way. and it is crear.
I now have my new gas tank in. The car runs great and starts up fine. The old tank was a rusted mess. I think it is safe to say the guy who said he leaned it did not do a thing to it. I took it for a half hour drive with no issues. It has a few slow oil leaks I will have to eventually figure out but right now happy it is running smoothly.
Nice to here it, I have a plastic filter, right before the fuel pump, it hepls me keep an eye on what is going thru to the Carburator. If the plastic filter is dirty, that tells me something is dirty, either the gas line coming from the gas tank is dirty, or the gas tank itself is dirty, or even the gas cap is lose. Keep an eye on all 3 them. Keep up the good work.
