Some people just don't get it. This is "The T-Bird".... You could only hope your car ever has the kind of recognition this car does in the grand scheme of things.

The only interesting part of it to me is that people were *****ing about 55000, 9 years ago.
And that seems like a bargain right now...

I wonder where the car is today.

But wherever it is, I bet 55000 wouldnt buy it...

You only live once . If it's affordable and you want it , buy it .If you miss the opportunity you'll probably regret it . I too , think 58-60 were the best years for T-Bird for various reasons .

Damn! I'd buy it, but I can't right
now. Woe is me...my gold chain's
    still at the jeweller’s - at "Bijan's
in Beverly Hills, don't cha' know -
getting some new 24 carat links
added. But as soon as I get my
chain back, I'll be back in action
    again, looking 'cool' and ready
    to buy!! :D:D:D

This thread is painful. After 9 years it still haunts me.

I made an effort to buy this car twice in those 9 years. Not a week goes by that I'm not bitter about it. I love it. The only thing that I find comforting is that Mr. O'Dell owns it and he let Larry hang onto it for a while. Roger sounds like a good guy.

9 years is a long time... It still hurts looking at it.

im i just not getting it, i mean it may be diferent as im in australia and grew up admiring watson barris roth etc.ive always been amazed at how far advanced these huys were, i mean look at your garden nome cars you all drive these days, smothed out bumpers shaved and hidden door handels all colour coded, this was all done in the 40-70s buy customizers, that lead the way and followed the influence andinsperation of these legends.
why these people and there cars arnt sung the prasis and in national muesums just fasinates me. there work has influenced every car builder company world wide that have followed there trends.
this being the reason like them or not you are all here, i for one looking at the car say 55k yes you could build a ground stomping what ever on a budget, would it be as good a qualty finish not in your life time no matter how good you are, would it be ground braking??? well if you did it 55 yes, but then your last name would be watson. so 55k maybe dollar for dollar no. but try getting one and doing a clone or simillar and 55k is your deposit.
history wise and collecterbillty, its worth double it is a national tresure no questions asked, is it ugly ?? yes and that is the reason its so good, if i have to explain that one what are you doing on hamb you should be driving a excel.
as far as boyd coddington goes ive never been so disalousioned buy a car builder and i just dont get it,i dont rate his employers work yes when he was young he coppied his peers work made a name for himself but he should be called bondo coddington not boyd. and may as well build fibergl*** cars, what a joke check book built bondo queen he was. may as well been pimp my hotrod, i thought the states hamered and dollied things square not bashed a ruf shap and bondod it over there was more dust on the floor then car in his shows.
on tv the only true metal worker is jessie james love him or hate him he is a marster metal worker.

  15. IMHO this is why old threads should auto-lock after a set period. Tech threads possibly excepted, although one could certainly link to old ones in new ones on the same subject.

This statement is exactly why I believe so many folks go around kissing the ***es of anybody they believe may have any chance of getting a article in some dime store news stand car rag for them.
Then in a few years the asking price for the car will be about double or more of comparable cars because of the “provenance”.

It would be naive to believe that one hand didn’t wash the other, even back then dude. There was more politics involved than in Washington

Be honest, if you hadn’t read someplace or been told that this T-Bird was an example of iconic art, craftsmanship and a cutting edge master peace, would you look at it as any more than another south of the border low-rider?

I just read this, At first I just looked at the first page. But then after seeing what car it referrred to, I went back to the view all. It sold a couple of times after the 55 offering at Boyds (Boyd never owned it. Gary had it there on consignment). Its Larrys original car (he gave me some of th purchase agreements, from when he bought it) The car was painted at Dannys shop in Corona, But Larry also gave me photos of him applying some coats of paint. After reading Har****s comments I respect him even more ( he was one of the guys that helped in painting Larrys casket). I think I've written enough , but the car means more to me than the money, from seeing it when I was a kid delivering papers to going out in my garage and looking and remembering of things past. 21. Glad to see you are the "KEEPER OF THE TORCH" so to speak. SO HAPPY TO SEE IT HAS NOT WENT THE WAY OF THE ORIG "HEARTLESS' as it did in Eugene. On the night before I left for FT ORD i was fortunate enough to get a ride in HEARTLESS, last custom I got the chance to ride in before I got out and went back to Eugene area. Randy sure did a GREAT job in recreating it and it went to a "good keeper", also, John D

There are very few people who deserve respect even if you are not a car guy...Larry Watson's body of work should put him in the same category as the Japanese masters, who are revered for what their skills have produced. Add to it the fact that he was an innovator, and what work of his that remains becomes almost priceless. (There is a really neat Rickster thread on here showing many of his paint jobs, can't get too much of it.) What, does every thread have to be brand new?

I choose to learn about the guys that paved the way. Skill, vision, art, persistence are words that come to my mind. Politics and making a buck come to yours.

Not sure what your slur regarding "south of the border low-rider" means, but it lets us all know where your head is at.

I guess you invented the "g***er look" on your own? You didn't learn about it?
I thought your car was just another big dumb fad 4 wheel drive wanna be. I guess I've got some more to learn.

A lowrider is a car originated by Mexican-Americans in CA. It was a part of the zoot-suit fashion that bloomed heavily through Los Angeles during the 1930s. So yes, they were around a long time before Watson was born!

Many of them had paint jobs done by people that you will never hear of that rivaled and in many cases surp***ed Watson’s work. You don’t know anything about them because they weren’t published in the old car rags that you have read.

And so you know exactly what I meant, I meant that the major reason Watson's work is recognized today is because he was a good self promoter and was well connected within the fledgling car magazine publishing community.

I did not say that was a bad thing. It’s just the way it was and still is!

I couldn't disagree more with moon rocket. "Kissing ***" may be how you view things, clearly not how the rest do. The fact is that the *** kissing works the other way. You may feel the need to **** up but Watson, Jeffries, Winfield, Barris, Roth, and countless others are the usually on the receiving end and had been since their 1st endeavors. There's a reason for it. Their work is exceptional and stands out a**** their peers, but you sort of have to be a person of talent to actually see it. No amount of promotion or ****ing up or, what was it? Oh yeah, *** kissing, can make up for balance, dedication, quality or detail. Low rider? To you maybe...

Hmm. I guess you learn something new every day. I didn't know that lowriders were cars, I thought they were people. And I didn't know they all wore zoot suits and cruised LA in the 30's. I'm sure glad Moon Rocket can set us all straight.

It's nice, but not $55,000 nice. At the end of the day it's just a custom t bird.

I once saw an original "Drag Pack" optioned '65 Biscayne, all original. Asking price? $65K. I loved the car but couldn't afford the price, so I went out, found a '65 Biscayne and built my own for $20K. History is nice,,,,,,,,but...........

  30. Zeno Stephens' 1955 Mercury was Larry Watson's first panel paint job....
Barris did the custom work on the '58, Larry painted it.
