That is the short line railroad from the old mine. Magma, smarrco, and then bhp bought themaand shut it down...

I grew up in Oracle and know the tri-community area well. My dad worked at magma for many years. What youre seeing is the short line from the mine, that went into the town of san Manuel

Sorry for little detail, google "magma san Manuel" and you should get pics and maps of how it used to be.

looks like a late twenties Dodge coupe to my eyes. Did you happen to notice a price on that '42-'46 Ford truck? I'm dieing for another one of those ugly buggers. The Model "A" stuff in the fifth picture, was that up in Rye at the motorcycle joint that won't sell anything?

That truck is sitting in the lot next to the infamous bike yard. Maybe give the grouch a call and see if he'll hollar over the fence for ya.

Dude I have actually taken My belair for a full blown pass down the old Tucson dragway strip with my dad, he used to race there in the late 70s and early 80s before I was born and it has been closed since the 80s. It was awesome, seeing where guys used to run way back when! Awesome pics!

One thing about living here and having hiked as many ghost towns as I have, I'm always amazed at how fast the desert can take back what we leave alone. I remeber Beeline in what seems like just a couple years ago (actually, its more like about thirty!) with damn nice pavement and relatively fussed over pits. All gone and grown over....

I had a '46 Ford just like the one in the pic, even the same colors: heavy half ton with granny 4 speed, and 100hp flathead. I was the third owner. I took it to the original owner and showed it to her (her husband had long since died). She got a big kick out of it...said that when they bought it new, it had wooden boards for bumpers. I also showed her the original owners manual, where she had written a shopping list in it.

My F-I-L at the time had their last truck, a '76 Ford 3/4T; it was pretty cool having their first and last trucks in the same family, still using them both.

  27. yeah the worlds biggest museum of desirable junk that will never leave the square footage that it sits on. years ago he had a orange/redish faded chevy coe that he was willing to sell me for $700, but i did not have the money at the time and never got back in time. i drove by there on my way to payson on saturday and back by on sunday.

next time you want to trespass on beeline i would love to get a few pictures myself.

That was a great thread just watched every post! Thanks

  29. I a few past threads, I mentioned that I had a goal to restore the old St Johns hiway sign on I-40 near Sanders in eastern Arizona, not far from the NM border. A few had expressed interest to help. As of now, am planning to start on this project soon and wanted to see if anyone still may be interested in helping me on this?

The city of St Johns is paying for the supplies, we need to handle our own- food, lodging, transportation, etc.
Lyman lake is now open and has cabins, beach and RV camping, private shower rooms, etc. There are also 2 hotels in town. You could also sleep in your car or pitch a tent on my property too if you wish. The sign is not far from Sanders and they have a gas station and a few places to eat, car wash and dollar store, so there are places nearby to eat and rest too. This is a casual project where we can talk cars, girls or whatever is on your mind.
If you can come up for a day or 2, I will try to arrange a private tour of Ferris' antique collection and his yard too. Ferris is very much into old tin, esp Model As and Ts including trucks. He has other makes as well.

Remember, this sign is about an hour north of St Johns and St Johns is a good 4 hours or so from the valley. From my place in Maricopa to my new place near St Johns, it is 250 miles.
This is a big job and it will take several sessions to get it completed. You can help one time or as often as you wish. basic painting skills, masking, wire brush, etc. the sign is about 40' wide and 16-18' tall.
Please email or call me if interested-

    thanks much
