I think Charlie Varrick somersaulted his Stearman in that yard! They've cleared it out some, though...

  4. Boy, the number of phony "car guys" on this site amazes me.

Yes, $1800 per car at their one million dollar reserve for all of them is high, but there are damn plenty of them that would bring that much - and a lot that would part out for more than that.

Even scrap you're talking like $300 a ton depending on the day.

And this is why guys with yards often just scrap out - the scrap man will pay cash up front, take the car away, doesn't care if it's missing parts or rusty, and won't whine about that or the price on it.

You mean the '60 or '61 Dodge?

  6. What does "unmolested" mean again? ......jeeez...

  7. Means unlike a junkyard car no one has picked parts off them. Not that hard to figure out.

Around here in the Carolinas ... it is 10 to 11 dollars a hundred MAX.
The highest I have ever seen it was $13.25 a hundred

    11 dollars a hundred = 20X $11. = $220 a ton.

My friends yard bought over 20 vehicles the past two days @ 11 dollars a hundred :)

Kinda 'testy' here, aren't you Rusty? Not disagreeing with your estimate of worth when a car or it's valuable parts is sold, but seems to me you are totally disregarding the overhead costs of dealing with these cars....which can only recovered from the sales, so they have to bought pretty cheap to make the math work.

You may be correct that they are worth more as scrap (in bulk) than what an entrepeneur can afford to pay considering the processing costs of selling them one by or in bits and pieces.

I could just see the look on the faces at the DMV when you apply for 550 titles without paper work!

    Priceless

Scrap prices are going down. You might get $200/ton delivered to a shredder yard.

I scoped out the inventory as close as I could and I gotta say that if I saw that alongside the highway, I doubt I'd waste the brake pad wear to even slow down for a better look. I see lots and lots of similar year 4 doors in my area still running and driving and I don't consider them hot rod material...

Hey rusty New Yorker, Maybe you should get them cause up there everything is rusted and gone after 5 years so these would be classics there. Plus the news papers say your govenor just loves autos!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  17. I was gonna bid on this auction, but the seller has zero feedback. Makes me leary.

You are incorrect about this, As If you have this many tons of steel, They will pay you top dollar and haul equipment in there and crush and haul it away on site. what they pay recyclers and crackheads that just bring in a few washers and dryers, or one car at a time, Is nothing compared to what they will pay for several hundred ton at a time. So if walk in is $200.00 rusty is prolly correct in thinking $300.00 for this much steel at once, and like I said they will come crush it on site and haul it away. But regardless, One million dollars is too much money for all these cars. first off there better be alot more desirable stuff in the lot, Or scrap price is about all it is worth, But even if there is more stuff there, At anymore than $500.00 a car. You will spend a few years of hard work just to break even. I am not going to type all the reasons why I know this about this type of business, But the ones who have been there understand, And the only way to make the rest of you understand is to put you in that business for a few years.

I think one of the things that is being overlooked is whether the land is also for sale and what the cost would be, or if there is a long term lease, 10 or more years. If the cars have to be moved to another location that alone could cost a small fortune. Even a nearby location could cost $50 to $100/car = $27500 - $55000 plus yard rental. It would be prudent to either have land included in sale price or negotiate a long term lease. To me more important than the value of the cars. Another thing is, that perhaps the city intends to develop this land (check with the city for possible development applications etc.) and thats why he's selling, and is trying to scam someone rather than calling the crusher only to be booted of the propery after purchase. I'd be more vary or that than the resale value of the cars themselves.

  21. I know this from 15+ years of selling cars and car parts. If all you see is an old 4-door and who cares, you're a moron. With exception of the actual doors, the front seat, the side glass and in some cases the rear glass, virtually every other part on these cars will interchange with the same year/make 2-door car. Sometimes they will interchange across multiple years. Now combine that with something that isn't reproduced and will never be reproduced.

And that's not to mention the threads on this same board where guys have converted 4-door sedans into 2-door sedans or even hardtops using a solid sedan as the base.

Hell, in one case a few years ago a car I parted out had the original owner's manual and dealer packet in the glove box. I sold that alone for more than I paid for the damn car.

But, that's because I'm not one of these phonies that barely knows a differential from his own rear end that he's sitting on; I don't think building a car means using just a credit card and a 1-800 number either. If that's how you think it's done, then you're going to see just junk here. Some guys are so bad, so absolutely stupid, that I can take the same car that's been sitting so long the paint is baked/burned/worn off and the car is all surface rust, the dumb guy calls it junk because all he sees is that rust, I knock it back a little with a wire brush, throw a quick and dirty coat of primer or flat black paint on there - hell, put it on with a brush even - and suddenly the same guy thinks the same car is a great piece and it sells.

It just amazes me how anyone can call themselves any sort of car guy and be that dumb, but this thread illustrates it perfectly.

consensus JUNK and stop the name calling it only makes you look bad--aren't we all friends here with differing opinions ?

  24. Ain't this getting "dramatic"? Where's the censors?

  25. Arizona cars have crap interiors, because they are basically baked out of the cars! Rust Belt cars generally have pretty nice interiors, and crap bodies. Find somewhere in the middle and build cars for the next twenty years from the two sets!

The seller is actually a broker for the car owner, from what I've heard on another forum. There is no way in hell the seller is going to get over $300/car, with current scrap prices the way they are.

  27. ,,,,,,,,,,,, are they offering parts off any of these vehicles?

Or,,,,,,, you buy the part you need for a million bucks, and the rest is 'kickback/rebate/free'?
