Sorry no pic. It was a 54 ford station wagon. I was paying it off about 25$ a week, 150 total. Almost had it paid for. After school I had to p*** by the old mans that I was paying out, couldn't get it till it was paid for.

Horror's it was gone. I hooked for home. Went in, mom and dad were there. Daddy said to mow the back yard. How could he possibly want me to mow the backyard at a time like this.

I stomped out through the house kicking everything in sight. Got out back to get the lawnmower, there was the station wagon.

Daddy had went and paid the last 50$. It was my 16th birthday. Best birthday ever. Rest in peace dad.

That was 35 years ago for me. I cant say what I did as getting my drivers license wasn't even a thought. My parents didn't think I was responsible enough and maybe I wasn't. I was almost 17 when I got mine. But I started borrowing (stealing) their spare car when they went to work when I was 15 to almost 17. Happy Birthday!!

 

Reading through this thread, I realized that 16 was 38-39 years ago for me. I didn't get my license until I was almost 18 (due, in part, to my older brother wrecking the family wagon twice, the first time before he had his license and should not have been driving.) Since it is now a couple of days later, I hope you had an enjoiable one.

Yeah, I remember it well (1966). My Dad had taken delivery that day of his new 1967 Mustang and he picked me up from school. I drove with him to DMV to take my drivers test. Then we drove to San Marino Ford where he had picked up the Mustang just hours before.
So, he drove his new Mustang home while I drove mom's '67 428 Galaxie home...all by myself!!!!

 

I remember July of 1986 was a perfect summer day. I took a drive through town and the chief of police pulls me over for "underage driving" Hey lets face it, I did a lot of it but lets just say that on that day I was lookin for him to pull me over, no more duckin on the side streets.

Handing him my new license felt good! One happy birthday later and I was on my way to drag main.
