I am diving into my interior needs for my 50 Mercury and was wondering what to use for door panels. I am customizing the interior a bit, however not sure what to attach the material too on the doors...do you use Masonite?, paneling? plywood?
Many people have used masonite or luan but I believe the current material of choice is some sort of poly vinyl sheeting. Check in with the Upholstery social group. I am sure you will find many answers there.
I just used some FRP (Fiberglas Reinforced Plastic) from Home Depot. 4 x 8 sheet, easy to cut, grind and drill. It has a texture on one side of what I used. Worked great.
Went to an auto upholstery shop and got door panel board. I don't remember the cost. Cuts with a jigsaw or knife, glues to itself real nicely, bends around corners, is water resistant, does pretty well with the right glue to keep vinyl on. I used simple push ins to keep it on the door.
Whatever you use for the panel material, be sure to use only a white adhesive to attach the vinyl. Yellow adhesive has a tendency to bleed through when used with a light colored material.
Dave (DDI) on the Hamb uses the yellow spray glue with no problem,,we did the white & green interior on in the Ranch Wagon with no ill effect,,and he always uses panel board from the upholstery supply. HRP
