    Hello!

I was wondering if this is possible and what is needed to do a 1951 merc with the 49-50 rear end, basically.

Are the trunk lids the same for all years?
Were the major differences in the body part of the quarter panel, in addition to the part that bolts on?

I'm sorry if this is a repeat question here, I've searched and not come uo with much. I may be picking up a 51 for a good price, but do love the 49-50 rear ends!
    Thanks!

Besides the obvious upper & lower quarter panels, you will need the smaller outer sections of trunk floor that attach to the quarters or shorten the 51 stuff. The 49/50 don't have the valance around the back which changes the trunk latch support panel or tail panel a little bit. The trunk lids are the same sheet metal with different handles between all 3-years. Bumpers & brackets are different. The biggest difference is the back window and related structure. You need a 49 or a 50 just to get all that stuff.

I'm more of a 51 type person so I'd be putting a leaver on it & leaver alone.

look for someone that wants to do the opposite of what you want and trade parts, or cars for that matter

After posting this, I looked through all 40+ pages of the 49-51 merc pic thread, and now have a pretty good idea of the difference ;)

Thanks for helping with the replies!!! I think I'd be jumping in too deep to do what I had thought. Plus, i found some of those pics to be convincing to leave the 51 rear in tact, and also not chop it too much (if any) being a 4dr sedan

  5. Ive got a pair of 49 quarters cut from a quartered out coupe if your interested. They need some work but definately useable , especially for a conversion!!!

there are two different manufacturers of these. the cheaper ones are crude around the wheel wells and the edges, the more exspensive ones are nicer, they are produced by Sherman. I havent used any yet, you can send shoebox1950 a pm, he installed some on a merc and said the fit was great..

The slick way would be to keep the extended fifty one fender intact, but relocate your trunk back even with the fender. Some work but you would get almost that wrap around fifty look. People do the opposite all the time, move their trunk forward to make a trick look to their tailights.

I'll second what Slddnmatt said. Forget the cheap ones, there shit! If you can't find a pair of rear quarters that are salavageable, buy the Sherman's.
