Hey all. I'm going to be purchasing a shifter soon for a super T10 to go in my '56 Chevy 150. I wanted a super shifter 3 or something similar but I have had no luck finding a used one with linkage for this application. I have a brand new super shifter 3 already but no linkage and the only place I have found new linkage wants almost twice as much for the linkage as I paid for the shifter 10 months ago. The most affordable option I have found at this point seems to be the Hurst Indy 4 speed shifter. However I am very curious why this is so much cheaper than the other offerings from Hurst. Does anybody have any experience with this model of shifter? The car will only get run through the gears hard maybe once a year, otherwise it's just cruisin' duty.

And yes I know an auto may make a more pleasant cruiser, but due to the car's past in my family and thus the sentimental value it has it will be a 4 speed forever.

Thanks in advance for any input you guys have.

Google "Hurst Compe***ion Plus 4-speed shifter" They are very expensive new, but Summit and Jegs sell install kits and parts. Also Ebay will have used units listed. I've used and rebuilt Comp plus shifters since the '60s. Just follow the installation instructions and you won't regret the investment.

The Hurst Indy line was a low-end line of shifters. When new, the Indy shifters were about half or a quarter the price of the Compe***ion Plus shifters.

It looks like Hurst sells two different linkages. The high compe***ion linkage that you mentioned (ouch that's a lot of bucks) and the "street" linkage that is priced about the same as the install kits for the compe***ion plus.

The Indy shifter will work if you don't do a lot of speed shifting but is a "universal" kit that usually takes some hair pulling before you are done getting it installed. It is more like the stock factory shifters from the late 60's early 70's in that it can seem a bit sloppy and as mentioned flimsy if you are throwing hard shifts.

As Fogger said, the Compe***ion Plus is completely rebuildable and Hurst even has a program where you send yours in and they rebuild it and send it back for a somewhat reasonable fee.

I kind of question why a guy would buy a shifter without looking into the total cost of the installation unless you got it at a fire sale price.

I bought the shifter because it was the kind I wanted and I knew it was going to be discontinued(I paid about the same as a comp plus). I called Hurst(after the buying the shifter of course) and was told that the linkage for the street super shifter will not work at all with a super shifter 3.
I also had know idea it would be so difficult to find this style shifter used for a T10(I've found at least a half dozen for a muncie)

Thanks for all the input. It saved me from wasting a couple hundred bucks.

That'd be great. The muncie linkages are all over, but linkage for a super T10 seems to be much harder to come by.

I'm a little confused, because the Indy and Compe***ion Plus shifters on Summit are literally the same price, to the penny.

I'm not sure if it was ever established why the Indy is such a P.O.S. I've been shifting one for about three years now with any problems. Are the metals different or is the engineering bad or what? When can I expect mine to fail?

As far as I know the biggest differance is the lack of adjustable stops on the Indy as far as the shift body goes. Kinda important if your banging gears, not so much just cruising. It might be built with lighter parts and/ or looser tolerences but not so much it's that noticable. Linkage and mounts are the big differance, Indy linkage will flex, real easy to blow a shift, probably the main reason they have a bad rep (deserved), here again only if your really working it hard. Granny shift it and the Indy will give years of trouble free service but somehow a 4 speed in a 56 doesn't sound like the type of car you drive that way. IMHO nothing beats a properly set up Super Shifter on a good 4 speed, especially on that 2/3 shift!
One other thing, when your figuring cost better figure in the cost of a new handle for it, you can't have that cl***ic chrome stick say "Indy", gotta say "Hurst".

I know nothing about the "Indy Shifter", but the "Compe***ion Plus" has been the gold standard for decades.
