White walls -what kind? I've got to replace the tires on the front of my 1950's style 1930 roadster. I might do the back too. They have wide whitewalls now, any recommendations on tire type/supplier? Thanks in advance.
Also, I've noticed the back tires have darkened 'white walls' - sort of putrid looking off-white color. Can this be restored to white or is it better to just buy better tires?
I am a thrifty builder, as I am on a retirement without a ton of money. I researched fat white walls and found my best deal with Diamond Back. A set of 4 tires 2 255x70x15 with 3.5" white wall and 2 235x70x15 3" white walls. The tires are made by BF Goodrich. COST delivered to my home was around 1050.00. Not cheap but the best I could find for the money. go to: www,dbtires.com/1-888-922-1642. Good luck.
Try universal tire in PA. I bought 4 each 600-16 and it cost $800 to my door and that included tubes.
You could save a lot of cash and be alot more HAMB friendly if you ran the proper bias plys for the period car you've got. And it would look so much better!!!! BUCKD
I just got these thru Summit. Came to 940 with tubes delivered. 650-16 Bias plys. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/cok-663520 Some places charge Tax, and some spots have unbeatable shipping rates.
Bias ply tires,,purple power or greased lightning and a stiff bristle brush will make the off colored white wall right as rain. HRP
i've had good luck with Eric at Universal Vintage Tire in Hershey, PA on my bias ply Lester 750/18's - have bought about 4 sets...also had good luck on radials from Bill at Diamondback...as far as cleaning...the best I've found is lightly clean with SOS pads...NO whitewall cleaner!!!! Will cause cracking...and believe me I've tried it all over the past 30 years and go right back to the "lightly" scrubbed SOS pads....good luck...Joe
As said above.. use the purple power but only let it sit long enough to start getting the scum off.. That stuff is strong--if you get concerned--just dilute it a little bit and let the brush do some work.. Then rinse with cold water and wipe them dry..
I use some "Mean Green" spray from Dollar General ($2), a brillo pad, and then a medium bristle brush. Usually does the trick. I imagine your current tires are "bleeding thru" the white from the basic black rubber of the tire. How does your car drive with the current tires?? Does it handle well or get grabbed by all those ruts and dips in the road? Do you drive long distances or just fairly local? Some say bias ply for originality of look and style. Some say if you want better handling go with radials. You can get radials in wide white if desired. Just gets down to cost.
Join the Alliance and buy them from Coker. Your savings will equal or exceed what an alliance membership costs. You do not want to run radials on that car, they will look horrible. I personally like the look of Firestones and I'm not alone. Posted from the TJJ App for iPhone & iPad
