I'm gonna have to agree with Ryan, Skratch and Brandy on this one. I can't wait to see the final results. The man has skills thats for sure. Sure I don't like most of his paint jobs, but he is catering to a certain crowd. Maybe his own personal style for himself is different.

His is the only one of "those show" that I ever watch anymore. The guy can flat out build stuff. I personally look forward to his take on traditional.

Plus, If he impressed G. Howard with new tricks, he must be doing something right.

He tried. The result was so ugly it hurt my feelings. So no worries there.

Just goes to show that p***ion, solid aesthetic and design will always look *that much* better than anything else.

I think it's great he's getting serious about rodding, and about BUILDING his car. I'm sure the ideas that come out of it will be amazing, if not totally revolutionary, just like every other thing that comes out of his shop.

I've enjoyed looking at his cars since his 1st gen Firebird was in Hot Rod in the late 80s(?). Like all of his cars, there were SO many cool details and modifications you didn't catch the 1st, 2nd, or 3rd time you read the aricle.

I'm in with you, man. I swear, Chip steals all my ideas... even ones I've never said out loud! :D I think I'm gonna start wearing a tin foil hat....

Looks like O.D. Green is the new black....

I'll reserve judgment till I see the car finished... or at least further along.

I can't help but notice how similar many on here's at***udes are to the very gold chainers you supposedly hate. Any true car enthusiast would build as quality of a car as possible no matter what style you choose. This could mean you do it yourself or pay to have it done but either way the quality should be the goal. If you build something less than the highest quality you can just to fit into a definiton ( rat rod,etc...) THen you truly do not understand the real beauty of a car. Someone said " the streetrod shops are putting away their peach paint.....". How is that different from what Jimmyshine does for socal? I love his work but Chaporis ( who I also like ) and his guys have built just as many billet rods in the past as well as still today. I've heard people on here dog out SoCal and then jump on Shines **** about his latest creation. It all sounds remarkedly like my freshman at the High School I teach at talking about the latest rapper, Athlete, or whoever. I'm willing to put up listening to all the whiners because of all the folks on here that do understand. THe jealousy thing is just like the trailer queen argument. THe guys that gripe the loudest about trailers are the ones who can't compete. THe guys with cars they drive that are good enough to compete with them rarely complain. One last thing, if you think Foose ****s so bad, then put your money where your mouth is and build something better. But of course we know we'll hear the excuse's about how you build for just you or whatever. THats all good and how it should be, but for that to be true then you shouldn't get your pink ******* in such a wad if Chip want's to come down stairs. You would not even be there if your cars were only for you. You know part of why you build is for the attention you attract from others or you wouldn't ever take your cars anywhere but the grocery store and stuff if that.

    I think I'm done.

Do ya think maybe he has been into traditional hot rods for a while since he has had that flathead powered 46 convertible for years. The black one with the tan top and uh oh red wheels.

I have met him a few times when I have been in the neighbor hood in huntington beach. There is like 20 shops with in a mile of his shop. There is some crazy talent in that zip code. He was the nicest guy when we were lookin over the locked gate. There was a sign about visiting hours when they were having a riddler thrash. He walked over said HI and asked if we wanted to come in and look. I thought well what is the sign for then?

You know his dad is Sam Foose and that guy blows Chip out of the water when it comes to talent.

Chip Foose the new Jesse James.

Man, some of you guys are real *****s. I like that he's doing a V-12 powered '32 Roadster, I think that's pretty damned neat. I want to see what talented craftsmen can do in this hobby, and I don't feel threatened by Foose's presence one bit.

I've wanted to do a P-40 based hot rod for a while I hope that Foose does something similar to what I wanted with the paint, and he has the vision to put 12 exhaust stacks on it. ;) The only thing I'd be pissed about is I didn't do it first.

  11. P-32 fighter?

I'm a bit of a WW2 plane buff, but that's a new one on me . . . not that it means anything . . . lots of stuff is new to me....

    Here's a pic of a B-32 Bomber.
Neat airplane, I believe 75 were built and saw service near the end of the war.

They were built as compe***ion to the B-29 - and as a hedge in case the B-29 didn't work out.

If some of you are aircraft buffs, try to find information on prop driven fighters that were either being built or on the drawing boards when the jets came in.
    Interesting stuff.
In particular the replacement for the P-38 Lightning- called Chained Lightning.

Not trying to highjack the thread here, but I think Foose will do a nice job.

After all, don't we try to do a better job next time around?
Whether it's a simple bracket or a whole darned car?

And who cares if the Gold Chainers grab onto trad?
A lot of hot rod stuff would not exist if not for these guys.
Then - as back in the day - or now.

I'm sure that most chainers enjoy their cars as much as we do, but there's a touch extra we get out of the deal when we've built the car ourself.
    Money can't buy everything....

I met Foose this year at the Detroit show, and bugged him while he was settin up their ride. He stopped what he was doing and gave me his undivided attention, we talked cars for a while...Pretty kool guy if you ask me. He asked me if I was helping someone set up and told him no I had a car in the ba*****t. And he thought the whole thing was kool and mentioned that he was building one for next year...........I hope to get mine done for next year, and I hope they park Foose between me and plowboy, plowboy tried to **** me up their in Detroit..........But I more than welcome Mr. Foose to the ba*****t, the gloves are off and it will be fun, now if I could work on my project all day everyday maybe I'll make it up their................Littleman

Damn some of you guys would ***** if Henry Ford himself was here today and wanted to build a hot rod. Yes, I know that's a rediculous statement and it was intended to be. :D

It'll be a Foose car. I'm sure pops will be a huge part in it. It'll be just what he wants so more power to 'im. The guy knows what he wants to do...and he's got more of what it takes than most of us have in our left nut, period.

I hope there's a Rides two hour special on it.

And just for kicks, I'd like to be a fly on his brain while he checked out the Lunar Lander. I bet he'd be gigglin' like a kid with a girly magazine.

That about says it for me.

Yeah I'm as jealous of him as the rest of you guys are whether you admit it or not. Jealosy can be a good thing if you use it to try to do a better job on your next project. Don't get pissed because you can't compete with him, get excited because the bar will be raised AGAIN.

I can't wait to see what he does when he directs his talents toward my interests. If I ever get a chance to see it in person, I'm sure I'll spend an hour or so just studying the details and there will be lots to study.

I have no idea what he will do but I'm pretty sure I'm going to like it. Not because I'm some kind of groopie, but because the son of a ***** makes everything he touches look better than it did before.

If you change the party in the Autorama ba*****t because he's coming, that's you fault not his. Only you guys can control that...but don't forget to check his **** out. Probably some cool stuff there.

My immediate thought was that Foose would "outshine" Jimmy's truck, which obviously had similar aero influences.

Did Shine's truck influence you at all? Be honest!!

I think this goes to show (once again) Chip (or his mega-talented Dad, Sam) can build anything they desire. Any look, any era, and any style. Truly one of the best of our generation and will be the Barris/Roth of the future.

I think its extra cool he chose a traditional theme for his personal car, too.

Oh, and Fat Hack...Rich guys ruin everything. Haven't you learned that yet?

You know what the solution is, of course....Get rich yourself! Then you can do whatever you'd like! heh heh...it's just that easy.

Seriously, Hack...If anyone was going to "ruin" the ba*****t at the beloved Autorama Xtreme, please let it be someone as talented as Chip. Better than Boyd coming down there, I think...

I'll never meet Foose in my life or even see one of his cars in person so I got nothing to lose one way or the other with him, but the first time I seen him on TV I thought he was just another guy buying stuff and putting it together but the more you see of him doing stuff by hand, the more I appreciated what he did, and to see him as a "supervisor" telling others what and how to do I think a person would be way off base making that ***umptiion as well,as he seems to be a hands on person. Foose is one very naturally talented guy when it comes to cars and seems to have a leg up on the majority of his caliber when it comes to personality and generosity

I really like to see him do this car on a average incomers budget and I'd bet it would still be a jaw dropper when it was done

I just dont get any of this Territorial Behavior.

I dont worry about "our scene" being invaded, because I'm not interested in any of that.

    I like Cars...

Personally, I'm dont give a **** about anybodys Fame or Wealth, but Skill and Knowledge impress me.

I'm going to keep an eye on this build.

    Because it's interesting to me...

Ditto for me. You know, we have the Ken Posies' Extremeliner here for our Wheelz show, and I spent a good hour looking it over. I really don't like the look BUT it is so well made and designed, I am envious of the results.

It inspires me, to try to reach that level of execution with my own ideas and designs, the ones that led me to the HAMB.

I like Foose--he's good at what he does, he seems nice and he looks like he's having fun. More power to him.

The sad part about this whole thread is.... while we're sitting around *****'n about Chip (insert any other builder in the spotlight) building a 'trad rod', he is probably building it right now.

Hell, at the speed Chip works and the resources he has at his disposal, he will probably have that car done before this thread has run it's course...

Sooo, quit yer *****ing and start building!!

It would be cooler if it was an original roadster body. But if Chip Foose chose to he could buy up all the original bodys and drive the prices up even more. then i would never get one.

I guess Dragnut picked up on what I was getting at...and Bleed understands the sentiment...so not everybody missed the boat here. That makes me feel a little better.

It's just more of the same, and I guess who really gives a sidways steppin' ****?! Everything is destined to become a milionaire's playground so long as it's the current coolest trend, so why the **** NOT welcome Chip into the one area conceived as being set aside for everything his cars AREN'T??!! Sure...let's give the little-guy traditional rodders their own little corner of the ba*****t and let them have their little party while the REAL show goes on upstairs.

But wait...what's THIS??? That little spectacle in the ba*****t was the talk of the weekend...and those who live here know that it's been the talk of the YEAR...you can't drive a rusty car with flat paint ANYWHERE without hearing some Bozo spout off about "The big Rat Rod show in the b*****t at Cobo this year where all them guys brought their unfinished old cars and RAT RODS!"!!! It's all anyone got out of Cobo Weekend, and now here come the mother ****ing band-wagoneers to make sure they get in on it for next year!

**** it...what have I got to lose? I'll throw BOTH gloves down...

Take a look around. I mean take a long-*** HONEST ****ing look around. What do you see??? What has our 'world' become??? Anyone go to Billetproof Detroit this year??? 'Best Custom' went to a VAN!!! Yes...a VAN...painted up to look like the mother ****ing GENERAL LEE for crying out ****ing LOUD!!! I guess, on ONE hand...picking the most ridiculous 'Pauly Teutul on Crack' THEME VAN present as 'Best Custom' gives the ULTIMATE middle finger to the whole concept of car shows in general...but on the other hand...expounding a silly-***ed THEME VAN above all others in a show that professes to be all about TRADITIONAL RODS & CUSTOMS sticks a firecracker up the *** of everyone who showed up to see, or to participate in a showed hailed as such!

I honestly thought KIRK! was joking...pulling a fast one or setting the guy up to prove a point...ala Cliff Gromer and Tony DeFeo (as if anyone is gonna follow THAT!).

Now lookie here...we got a whole posse of guys bending over to kiss Chip's *** and welcome him and any OTHER millionaire wanna-be into something that was established as being devoid of high dollar rich ***** toys!

Ha Ha...I say BRING IT THE **** ON!!! By 2007, if this FAD is still all the ****ing RAGE, there won't be a ****ing DAMNED bit of difference between the UPSTAIRS and the DOWNSTAIRS show except for the paint, or lack thereof on the million dollar RAT RODS!!! Just like every 'little guy' drag racing cl*** soon explodes into a high dollar game of one-upmanship...this is destined to be just another glaring example of the same.

And...for the record...the Coast-To-Coast '39' doesn't draw **** from the Foose-penned BOYDSTER cars! All Foose did was slide his fist briskly off some steel 32 and 33 Ford's **** and whipped up a smoothed out fallic rendition of what he saw!

The Coast-To-Coast cars look like, well...Coast-To-Coast cars! You all ****ing hate them and whine about how they don't LOOK enough like a 37 or 38 or 39 FORD, but guess what...THEY AREN'T SUPPOSED TO!!! They're NOT touted as FORDS at all! They're cartoon kit cars that are what they are and don't pretend to be anything ELSE. For ****'s SAKE why do I have to point that out?!

If some no-name schmuck had dragged that ****ty heap that Foose 'built' to the Detroit Autorama this year it wouldn't have gotten a second glance from ANYONE. Did anyone even really LOOK at that ****-pile...or did they just see the name on the card??? I, for one, looked it over VERY carefully...in person, and in every magazine feature on it.

Nothing flows. Look at the pedals. What the ****? Were they left over from some DUNE BUGGY parked at the shop or something? That column drop...for lack of a better word...what is THAT all about? The equivalent of a wad of GUM holding the column off your crotch I guess?! The shape and 'design' (and man, using the word 'design' to describe that car really stretches the boundaries of the word!) are so stale, nuetered and generic that there's simply NOTHING to it! It doesn't even piss people off as well as a Coast-To-Coast cars! It envokes NO emotion, save for the utter DISGUST that comes from seeing something so lame hand-job it's way to stardom! Everyone was in on the girls' locker room drama behind Charlie the Crybaby leaving Boyd's shop to go paint this glorified dog terd long before it arrived at Cobo...so the free publicity that a whole suitcase full of drama can buy was spread out like a red carpet all the way to the Riddler Award...as if anyone expected any different.

Do I know Chip? NO! Have I ever met him? NO! But I got two eyes and I can see a ****py car and a guy who just leaps from spotlight to spotlight slapping his name all over whatever he sees as hot at any given moment in time. Garth Brooks with a bondo paddle!!

And my comment on Lobeck was nothing against the guy, I was just wondering who ELSE is going to show up with a high dollar RAT ROD to show off in the ba*****t next March?

For the record, Barry Lobeck won my respect as a bona-fide craftsman LONG before half you guys knew what a car WAS! Way back in the 70s, when NOBODY was building traditional styled cars, he churned out a TRIPPLE KICK *** Black 40 Ford complete with flames and flattie power! This, in a time of kaliedo-kolored paint jobs and fur-covered interiors! His recent creations have been nothing short of spectacular as well...and really, he's one of FEW 'big names' I'd applaud to see building something more traditional.

Like ****era...you don't see HIM saying "Gee...I think I'll build me a RAT ROD!"!! He never followed trends or fit into catagories...he created NEW catagories and built what HE wanted regardless of what everyone ELSE was doing, and that tradition continues today in his Buick powered modified! Chip isn't fit to shine ****era's SHOES as far as I'm concerned.

    ****...why stop NOW??

T-man...I'm going to submit my resume' all over town...maybe I can get a job as a secretary in a billet shop...then BUY one of the most respected hot rods on the HAMB, only to find it not STREET ROD enough and sell it off right away??? Then I can hawk my POVERTY RODDER badge to buy some toilet paper.

It's over. It's so ****ing OVER!!!!

I told ya to hit the Nuke Switch, didn't I, Boss?

    Fire when ready.

    ****ing over.

i cant believe anybody would be bashing this guy for cars hes built in the past. hes a shop owner, any shop owner is going to build what his customers want, otherwise you wouldnt be in business long. now hes building what he wants for himself (not you or anybody else) that just happens to be exactly what we all like and some of us are going to hold that against him? that makes no sense at all. if he was joe schmoe of the street we'd be accepting him as a fellow hamb'r since hes chip foose hes ****** hot rodding tradition. im not one for rants but this one should have never started.

No, what I was trying to say is that I am indifferent to another guys Fame or Wealth.
It doesnt make me like him more OR less.

A couple of Million Dollar "Rat Rods" wont make me build my Cars any different.

Good for Chip he always makes clean good designs. Im looking forward to seeing it.

Why the uproar when there is a bigger travesty going on beneath are noses. People are putting huge wheels on cars so that they sit higher than my truck. This is worse than the 80's style wheels sticking 4 inches past your fenders. By the way there are still some mexicans in my neigborhood that wont let go of that look.
Fight the bigger enemy bad taste.
I hear Richard Simmons is building a traditional hot rod with a pinto engine too.

It would seem that some folks here forget what has perpetuated our hobby. Bob Hirohata was a gold chainer. As were many of the famed show-rod owers of days gone by. That's right, I said owners. Guys who paid a "name" to build them the koolest, latest, trendiest thing money could buy. The hobby would never have gone anywhere without the financial backing of some of these guys. How's that you might ask?

Well sparky, what would've happened if Barris couldn't have kept the doors of his shop open? How many pleats do you suppose Tony Nancy had to make to finance his digger? Would Larry Watson have done some of the wild stuff he did all on his own dime? Well, maybe, but who knows.

Support your local builder. Talk a rich guy into a trad-rod. That way the builder can pursue some of his more grandiose ideas on somebody elses bill. It's called progress. ****, at least then maybe the dude will drive the car instead of hauling it around on a stretcher.

What I don't get are the guys who get bent out of shape by the million dollar buyers commisioning a traditional car. Why does that piss you off so? Is it because they're capable of much more refined work yet they decided to come steal your thunder? Christ, get over it. Real hot rods were around before you decided to build one and they'll be around long after.
