Axle experts! I just got this vintage axle dropped okie adams style with welded in solid steel Sections. Its in really good shape just had surface rust, i sanded down the ends and theres no stampings, just ford stampings in the web. The dropped sections are just slightly thicker than the axle. Opinions? What do you think? Posted from the TJJ App for iPhone & iPad
You know i forgot to measure the boss Ill have to do that later, but yes the ends are cut out and welded... Posted from the TJJ App for iPhone & iPad
Looks like a filled axle to me...I have had an Okie Adams axle and he cut the ends off the axle and welded on his ends..so the tops of the axle ends dont look forged like yours does. The Okie axle since the ends were plate steel had a much smoother look too on the edges..not kind of irregular like yours is...hope that helps
The ends are plate it is not filled, the front and back are finnished smooth but The top and bottom you can see the weld lines i just didnt take pics of that. And this thing is heavy as hell....
This is one I had and sold All 4 of them iv seen look like this ........ this one was confirmed by someone that has several and other that know. Most he did were done on 32 axles
This is a Zimmer and it's the only one I've seen other then the one in Tom McMullen's 32. Like Tom's it has 21 wholes in stead of the usual 19. They have a nice slow even radius on top. This is the first time I've heard anyone mention the word Zimmer on the H.A.M.B. Any more threads?
Theres a couple old hamb threads that mention zimmer Thats where i heard of them....do you know anything else about their axles?
Nevermind about zimmer read their ad again theirs are dropped then filled with rod, I thought theirs were done with the cut plate too....
Looks like that one has just a bit more Of an S shape, mine looks to be more of a smooth rainbow arc untill the very Bottom... I got this one from a guy in oregon..
I think your getting to picky now, yours is a model A axle, im betting the drop is a tiny bit different so thats why the differences. youll never know for sure but i wouldnt be afraid to call it and Oakie axle. JEFF
I think your right no way too know 100% unless it was stamped but he didnt stamp them all from what ive read And besides how many people did it this way? And this one is done really well solid as hell and heavy!
You know best if it looks like the ends of the axle look like welded up plate (hard to see in the pics) ...if you say it is plate then it most likely is an Okie Adams...the one I had wasnt stamped with his name. I cant imagine he was stamping his name into an axle he did while working at Blairs...most likely the stamped ones were the ones he did on his own time..
Ill take some pics of the spots where you can see a lil of the welds when i get a chance , also when i get the axle all cleaned up. It really is in nice shape, Looks like it was painted white at some point theres lil bits of white paint in spots. Thanks everybody for the input...
For anybody interested i spent the last couple hours sanding the axle down and gettin it cleaned up so i could take some detail pics of the welded areas. i think its pretty interesting to see the way it was done... Posted from the TJJ App for iPhone & iPad
I have owned a few of these axles and they were all crude like your photos show. I have never used one but still hung one on the wall. I guess the welding must have held up or we would have heard about problems. It sure looks like the real deal to me.
OK I was going to ask why couldn't it be a 37 to 47 (as well as Model A as previously stated)... But the perch to perch does indicate it is a Model A. (KP to KP doesn't mean much due to the way it's been dropped...)
It may not be the prettiest in spots but it could be finnished up to look real nice. And im no welding expert but i have no doubt it would be fine to use its solid and hefty as hell, and im sure it was already used for a long time cause i found 3 different colors of paint on it the ford black, red, and white.
I could of sworn that i read when okie dropped the axles he made them stay Stock or close to stock dimensions, stock model a kp to kp is 51" right?
