Did all hp Ford FEs use a oil pressure relief valve in the block or only the late ones?

  2. T'his is an old thread, but I will add something. In 1960 I saw a black 60 HiPo Galaxie Starliner win Super Stock. It was and is still owned by John Fuller. It had a name, "Nightcrawler" I may be able to find a picture to post. I had a 62 Galaxie 500XL Convert, 406/405 HP. It turned 13.65 @ 105 MPH and won its class at Lake Geneva Dragway.

  3. Here is a picture of the 60 Starliner I mentioned. If I can attach it.

friend of mine , mike short , had a 406 galaxy that was a family car, sure put a lot of "hot" cars to shame most of the time with 4 people in it...

Great stuff guys ! I had a brand new 62 oxford blue Galaxie 500 406 / 405 hp tripower car. loved it . ran mid-high 13's with stock exhaust lake pipes 4:11 gears and 4-speed.pretty sure it would have run very low 13's high 12's with tubing headers, hurst shifter, 4:33 gears and a better driver !!! suprised many a big block Chevy, GTO, Chevelle , .ran wonderful until I decided to pull the motor, have a supposed expert blue print the motor. never ran the same, blew oil, and had several top Ford men try to solve the problem . to no avail ! next 2 owners could not solve the problem either. Probably would have kept the car. ashamed to tell what I sold it for circa 1972. it was app. 20k mile immaculate car.

  7. 18 days until the FE Race & Reunion. Nick Smith will be bringing the two black '60 HiPo's to race and a recently finished 100 point red '60 HiPo 352-360 Starliner all the way from Florida. If you want to see the finest '60 HiPo Fords in the country this is the event to be at.... Hope to see you there.

I had a 1960 Ford Fairlane that for some reason had the Galaxie chrome on it and had the 352/360 engine in it in 1962 that I raced at DFW Texas area drag strips. It usually turned in the high 13's and low 14's; About 95 mph. I spend a few years of my life putting it back together each week when I would tear something up or blow something up. There weren't many places back then to get anything race related for a Ford. The drag strips would give me a hard time about the 352 engine as most of them were Chevy lovers and had no idea what the 360 hp Ford was. Good times/bad times.

It's amazing what you can get out of these old heavy cars. But FE's are definitely a great motor. never any issues with them.

Those two 60's are 2 of my favorite cars of all time! Thought I'd scored a black 60 Starliner a few yrs ago but between the time I called and the time I got there (same day) a previous looker called the owner and put dibs on it :(. I'm still upset when I think about that. I stuck around that evening just to make sure the other guy showed up too. $2000 was a fair deal for a super straight & solid black Starliner that could be still be driven! This was in 1999 or 2000 timeframe.
I've always had a 64 with a 352. Freshened up with a nice little performance cam seemed to make a fun little screamer out of it. Nothing impressive really, just really woke it up to where you could pass another car whenever you wanted to, pull out in traffic and be going 60 mph in a matter of a few seconds.

That would be awfully fast for a 352. Regardless, they seem to be very nice. I like the color...

  18. My most favorite 50's - 60-'s cars of all of them were the 1960 Ford Starliners. Wow,,,,,these guys were lookers for sure. The 61's were sharp also, but the 60's were the cats meow for me. I would love to own one.

  19. 352.s had a reputation for being dogs. I believe it was because most came with a cruseomatic trans and 300 rear gears. I took a 300 hp 1959 352 interceeptor and put it in a 56 ford with a stick and 411 gears. made it a pretty fast car back then. The stock factory exhaust manifolds where poor very restrictive. the autolite vaccum secondary carb was also poor peformance wise. I used a carter AFB with mechanical secondairys. I still have the 352. I have a 6 cylinger 55 wagon that I cant sell. Im thinking of rebuilding the engine and putting it in the wagon. My 59 300 hp engine came with flattop pistons and adjustable rocker arms. I put solid lifters on the hydraulic cam. I seemed to work Ok? OldWolf

  20. I agree with your assessment on the bad reputation 352s had back in the day. A friend also put a 352/300hp Interceptor in a '56 Customline, stick with 411s. He used to blow away another friend's '61 Impala 348/250 three-speed on a regular basis , and he ran the super restrictive "flat-log" exhaust manifolds.
I spoke with Bernie Goleck last night at our local cruise. Bernie, for those who don't recall him, ran many 427s for Ford back in the day and can still tell you everything there is to know about FEs, who ran them, part numbers, etc.,etc. He was impressed when I told him of the two '60 352s at the reunion. He said back in the day a good one would go 13.9 or so.
Just goes to show when motors are done right and everything else is set up correctly, they can scoot in spite of the weight they carry.

  21. I take that as very high praise if Bernie Goleck was impressed with Nick Smith's '60 Ford's times. Bulding the engines for them was a very fun project for my Dad.

  22. By the way if anyone is looking to duplicate these 352's or any other good running FE let me know via a PM. My Dad's cost is very reasonable and I think you will be pleased with his work. He is doing a 427 right now for a customer.

  23. And well you should take that as very high praise! This man is really incredible with the amount of knowledge he has retained. I'm not sure exactly how old he is, Has to be well into his seventies, but he is as sharp as a tack.
He told me last night that Ford tried to sell all of the "cammers" they had left for less than $700.00 and they had no takers!! He said they then sold them to Holman and Moody for around $50.00 each!!

  25. One really nice thing Ford did when they started producing High Performance cars was to give them upgraded HD suspension, brakes, tires and wheels as part of the package. Early hydraulic lifter 352's and 390's were not impressive in the day.

Two beautiful cars. 60 & 61 Starliners are a couple of my favorites. I used to run a 63 Ford back in the day. 390 2x4's, t10 & 4:56 gears. I must have hit the right combination, best et was 13.15 It did have 427 heads but I don't recall what cam it had. The tech guys at Detroit made me run it as a 428 after I blew off a 396 Chevelle & the guy bitched to them. No problem. Next run I beat a 421 Pontiac. Guy with the Chevelle would never race me again.

In 1960 I was at a drag race in Davie Fl where a cheap body 1960 white business coupe 352/360 3 speed OD set the SS national record and was the first car officially in the 13s. They tore that thing down to the last nut & bolt but it was legal. I believe it was on Casler recaps but my memory isn't what it used to be. The 348 Chevy guys were not happy at all. 57Custom300, I had a car exactly like your avatar, even the same color in 1964 with a 63 427/425 in it, Ballenger bros headers, 4 speed, 4.56 gears

Car sounds like it was a lot of fun. I like the sleeper look of it, like the 60 2dr. Sedan featured here. Mine is running a Yblock with a lot of internal engine work. Looks stock except for the headers.
