Hey, my name is dan and i`m building an sdra style car. It`s in the roller stages now waiting for my son to come over and finish welding because he can still see. It`s short by most standards 112" wheelbase. My opinion on motor is HA/GR slant 6mopar,SDRA 194 to 292 chev. both are very strong basic design and parts are very easy to find Another HA/GR motor is the chevy truck 261 although not as cost effective as the first ones Good luck.

Hi Mike, name is Tom and I am just completing an SDRA dragster with a Chevy 194 and PG. My build thread is "SDRA Dragster For The Coast".

I would add to Dans motors a few others. If HA/GR Chevy 235 and small GMC (think 257") and for the SDRA a great motor, big inch is 300 Ford with a C4 trans and GMC 302" with a PG or TH350. Lots of parts out there for all of these motors.

In general most all the power gains in these inline 6 motors will be found in the head modifications, better intake flow, bigger valves, more carb CFM and increased CR.

Make sure you read both the HA/GR and SDRA rules a few times before you make up your mind on what type car you want to build.

I'm surprised no one has jumped in on this as there has to be a good variety of opinions among HA/GR & SDRA racers.
I have a slant 6 in my dragster but used it mainly because it was acceptable for HA/GR and easy to find for a low price. There is lots of information and support on the Slant Six website. It has a 12 port head, small ports though.
The Chevy has 25 more cubes. Check the 292 head to make sure it doesn't have bigger combustion chambers than a 250 head.
Mild standard hop up techniques should yield similar improvements in horsepower for either engine. Serious horsepower increases require expensive forged pistons and strong connecting rods.
Get the Leo Santucci book for a good look at the Chevy Six. Go to the Slant Six website to learn more about the Leaning Tower of Power.

    Good luck with your build.

Well Mike, my two cents worth. Basically the 230/250/292 have the same head with almost the same chambers 72-74cc and the same size valves. The 194 small chamber head is 62cc and will increase compression on stock 230/250/292 1-2 points but you have to do a lot of expensive machine work to get it right, mostly around the valves. One cheap deal that will add compression and HP to a 250 is to drop in a set of Chevy 307 Flat Top pistons (same bore and stock 5.7 rods).

I think you can make more cheap HP with the Chevy because there is a lot of stuff out there for them at a reasonable price. I am a Chevy guy and don,t have a clue how to make slant 6 HP. Lots of guys on this forum that can help you witch ever way you go.

Biggest problem with the slant 6 is the pistons are WAY down in the cylinders. Around .180". It takes a hefty cut on the block and the head to get some compression. Fortunately there is enough meat to do that, The other problem is it has a 3.40" bore so unless you bore it quite a bit bigger valves aren't real effective.

Old6Rodder and Joe Hamby should jump in on this as they have far superior slant 6 knowledge compared to what I know.

Mike, as a general rule the stock pistons in a 250/292 motor are about .015-.020 in the hole at TDC, normal machine work on the block is to -o- deck the block and mill it so the piston comes right to the top edge of the block. When you install SBC 307 pistons most of that hole is taken up with the piston and you will only need to mill a few thousand's off. Remember that stock 250 & 292 pistons are .300 to .085 dish, they were for 8.0-8.5 CR.

The 292 motor is a beast of it's own as the block is taller and the rods are longer. Cost to build even a mild 292 will run more than a 250. But I will say from past racing experience that there is no substitute for cubic inches, thats why the 302 GMC, Chevy 292 & Ford 300 are popular.

  16. Hi Mike,
What's the latest on your slant 6 dragsters? Any other new pictures or engine info?
I have some parts you might be interested in?
