Hi, im looking at buying a second hand kse midget cl*** power steer KSE box second hand. Its a left side drive, my question is can i flip it over to be right side drive if i rotate the the reservoir filler end of the housing? or is this not possible? Please dont get into the whole "the car will turn the wrong way" bull S. Im a big boy and im not stupid, the car will steer in the correct direction. My question is specific to the internal workings of the kse box and weather the reservoir filling section can be rotated.
If you intend to use that in a street driven car its going to steer way to quick. The reservoir tank shaft is pressed into the body boss. I know you are a big boy but this is a left steer box so if you flip it to right steer the pitman arm will have to point upward to work correctly and you will have a severe drag link angle, if you position the pitman arm down to level the drag link it will operate reverse.
Wrong, with the shaft comming out the left hand side and turning the wheel to the right the arm on the spindle pulls and the tire turns right. Flip the box and turn the wheel right and the steering arm on the right hand side pushes to turn the tire to the right. Pitman arm on the box still references down. There is nothing inside the resivor tube except for fluid, so it can be rotated and the steering arm shortened. BTW all internals inside are/based on a GM/Saginaw box.
I have seen them both ways but don't know what is involved in changing over. I have only worked on sprint cars. Pavement cars usually have right side steer and dirt cars, left side. Call KSE.
The sector shaft in a sprint car box turns 360 deg. so they can be flipped over and the pittman arm will be in the correct direction.
Yes boys you are correct I went home and checked my box and you can flip it and reindex the arm and it will steer correctly, first mistake this week, not bad, made to Thursday.
Haha thanks ****, i guess a few people here confused over my "fliping" i wanted to litteraly take the whole thing and turn it over, as you did, which would work but Acording to Gary at KSE(emailed me today) theres an air bleed valve which needs the orientation. so rotating is out. however turns out i can keep the correct orientation, swap the housings left to right, and replace the rack gears and spool valve. (acording to kse) thanks guys.
Send it back to KSE and let them do it. If I remember right, we used to send KSE steering gears back at the end of the season for rebuilds every winter. I don't think it was terribly expensive, unless we knew the gear came from a car that was in a hard wreck.
