I've been looking at these small batteries for my latest project car. I bumped into this thread and the comments by SPEEDBARRONS about the battery in the NAPA jump starter box. I contacted him earlier today to find out exactly what NAPA part number he was talking about. I called my local NAPA and they had the ES2500 unit on sale for $109.99. Then I went to my local Harbor Freight store here in Glendale, Arizona. I talked one of the guys working there into leting me remove the back cover to check out the battery ( item #38391 Click...( http://www.harborfreight.com/automo...2-volt-jump-start-and-power-supply-38391.html ). Bingo ! Totally sealed battery. It's the same size as the PC680. Click for a pic and manufacturer info...( http://sealake.manufacturer.globals...-acid/1021853389/Sealed-Lead-acid-Battery.htm ). On sale at HF for $49.00, use the 20% off newspaper coupon = $39.99+tax. Plus there's a nice cut-off switch in the face plate and built in charger.
Thanks to SPEEDBARRONS and the rest of you folks for sharing info in this hobby. Makes it fun !!! This is my first post.

Old Volkswagens had the battery under the passenger seat. You could smell acrid battery smell if you ran the battery down and then got it started and it charged at a high rate. I never liked that arrangement but I never heard of illness from it. The back seat would rot out in fifteen or twenty years over the battery if the car lived that long.

If I HAD to put battery in the passenger compartment I'd use a sealed box and vent it through the floor.
