duraspark resistor wiring

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by 1oldschool1, May 1, 2013.

  1. I'm very near the fire up on my fairlane. (thinking this Saturday 5/4) my uncertainty is where to place the resistor for the duraspark 2. I have Google imaged the schematic. is it right?

splice into positive wire from coil and splice red wire from terminal #2 and run wire to ignition switch?

What is the purpose of the resistor?

The resistor limits current through the coil.

The required resistance is the same as for the points system, so if the original ignition switch to coil wire is intact, you can just splice that to the Duraspark coil connector. If you are running new wire, then the resistor goes between the ignition switch and coil.

Some cars also had a resistor byp*** during starter cranking. A wire from the "S" terminal of the starter solenoid to the coil wire after the resistor. This allows maximum voltage to the coil when the starter is drawing down the battery. If you use the points wiring it should already be in there, up under the dash somewhere.

One confusing thing, is the colors on the start/run connector for the module change color between the module and harness. The module white is the starting mode, but connects to the red/blue stripe starter solenoid wire.

I made my own diagram when I converted an OT truck. I used the original points wiring and as much of the Duraspark donor harness as I could.
