The Merc is now in color. Sprayed one gallon of Acrylic Black Lacquer this morning.

  6. Man that looks good! How long before your fingerprints start growing back after all that blocking? Now you gotta wet sand and buff. You probably won't have fingerprints for a year! :)

  7. You can have any colour as long as its black.Just like the awesome man Henry Ford said :) .Great colour choice and great work on building a really cool merc

Thanks to all for the postive feedback. Next major task is to put the body back on the chassis for the last time....I hope!

It looks like you have a very nice place to get the job done in, I'm sure that helps quite a bit for keeping track of parts and such![IMG]

Final assy has begun! Wet sanded the clear lacquer with 1000 grit before I installed the body on the chassis today. Will wait several weeks for the lacquer to cure then start buffing. Lots of work to do in the interim....

Installed the deck lid and front clip. Installed both doors today. Doors are still in primer because the gaps at the top of the doors need more work. They just did not come out tight enough.

SlddnMatt was kind enough to give me a couple of scrap window frame pieces so that I could cut my window frames to close the gap. Will use the scap pieces to add the extra length to the "B" pillar side of the door window frame.

Joe, Finally it is coming to-gether. Looking good, it looks like you find the doors a little heavy. Keep up the good work. Larry

Larry: doors are just bulky and hard to manage by yourself. Did not want to chance damaging the black paint.

Installed the hood today. Engine hoist provided the neccesary assist. Safe and convenient way to position, fasten, and adjust the hood without damaging the paint.

  20. Never thought of trying to put a hood on like that. I'll have to try it when I put my hood back on.

Merc is taking shape. Getting closer to a driver. Installed the radiator, fixed the gaps on the upper window frame to body on both doors, prepped the doors for paint, and painted the doors. Mocked up the 49 Merc dash and steering column.

Doors will need some finish sanding with 800 grit before I spray them with clear lacquer.

Bill (Tnomoldw): Nice looking Merc! Do you have any info on the side mirrors? Look like 40 Ford. I also have been searching for nice set of Sombero hubcaps.

:) :D I came across that Merc picture and posted as kind of a dig on you ,like your car is all covered the Merc pic is a reminder of maybe what your car looks like. ;)
I think any type of door edge application mirror would look great . There arethousands of styles. The Sombrero caps are available from many sources .You might pick up some scruffy ones and do a super polish and buy a couple new badges for the centers , warning though they are made in Tiwan . And start looking for spotlites if you need them.:D:cool:

  29. Unless the formulas have changed, in the 40 years since I shot acrylic lacquer, you may end up regretting the clear coat
