It all started when broke the tip of the bendix spring ***embly off my starter today on the Ford. Not a big deal. Had it towed home, took off the starter (that was fun) never have seen a starter like that before. I went to Early Ford in San Dimas, got a new (re-built) one along with the spring ***embly that attaches to the front. I ***ume I put it on right as it starts, but here is the problem. When I turn it over it sounds like it is struggling, like I have a low battery. It didnt sound like that with the old starter. It took a little time, as it is 6 volt. I didn't kill the battery when the starter broke, know what it was right away and didn't try to start after that. This morning I cleaned the battery terminals first, tried to start it, sounds like a bad battery. Turning over very very slowly. I went to unhook battery and the cable that goes to starter from solenoid is almost on fire, red hot. I unhooked battery. Could the starter be wrong, ie not positive ground? I didnt have any of these problems until I put new starter in
It's drawing too many amps. Try putting another ground wire from starter housing to frame (thick temp wire). If not you might a have a faulty starter.
just my 2 cents worth--your starter only spins one way. they work great on 12v neg, just spin faster!
Starter dose not care about polarity + or - all same same to it. It does sound like either a defective or 12 V starter as you had no issue before.
Have the battery cables been replaced at one time? If so, were the correct gauge cables used? Heavier gauge cables are needed for 6 volt systems. My older brother used regular 12 volt battery cables on a 6 volt system and it had the same symptoms as you describe. When he put heavier gauge cables back on that took care of the problem, without any other changes.
My pos cable gets hot on start up. I had the same problem, it was a bad earth connection to the block.
You may need to clean the face of the starter and the block, where they bolt together. That is your starter ground. A little bit of paint or other interference will make a world of difference. Also... Your starter doesn't care about polarity.
Thanks all. Found out the shop I got it from has had a bad batxh of staters. Getting my old one back and just putting the Bendix on like I sould have. I got a little worried when i saw the brushes come off, but to save $150 i will spend the time and learn how to put them back on.
