    Hi everyone.

Im in the process of purchasing a MA 54 chevy 2 door sedan. The gentleman says he does not have any do***entation on the car, no previous form of reg, he just tells me the cars been off the road for 35 years. I would like to see if its possible to register the car or re reg the car in MA. I believe the car was last reg in MA. Does having a vin help? and where would it be located?

update: he can get bill of sale from previous owner*

Thank you to all who can shed any light on this!

My suggestion is to go talk to YOUR DMV. They seem to all have different aswers ad require different things (no matter what the law reads).

Thank you pre war, any idea on vin location? its claimed to be the block code.

  4. In Wisconsin you get the VIN verified by a State Trooper and get a bond and send that to the state with the other paper work they need and you get your ***le in about 3 weeks. That's what I did for my roadster. You need to call the MVD in Maine and ask them what the process is for your state. Don't go by what anyone on this site or any other site tells you they think is the right way, the only people that matter are the ones at your motor vehicle dept. It should be pretty straight forward.

Sorry no, I mostly do earlier stuff, but there are a ton of guys building those cars on here. Ask one of them. Also, to help your time here go a bit smoother, you may want to go to the introductions area and do a quick intro FWIW.

  6. '54 Chevy vin is on the A-post on the left side plain as day.

Lazy-good name choice. HAMBers live all of the world. You need advice for M***achusetts.

Step 1 Introduce yourself to the HAMB
Step 2 Open Google-type in Registering a Vehicle without a ***le in M***achusetts.
    Step 3 Hit Enter
Step 4 Find 83,700,000 hits in 0.2 seconds
    Step 5 Read some -here's a starter: http://www.dmv.org/ma-m***achusetts/buy-sell/state-regulatio

THANK YOU. I was beginning to think I was the only one who used Google. Most of the worlds info is there and people act like they're scared to use it.

Probably the easiest and cheapest is that both of you go to a Judge, tell him the situation and ask him to have short letter written by him OK'ing the DMV giving you a new ***le for it for of course a small fee and be done with it.

A sitting Judge is more powerful that the Pope Himself!!!

    Been there, done that...

and 5 window please understand im 22 im well adapt to the internet highway, but on the downside the ma dmv website can be vague to the questions you want answered, and i knew i could get a simple answer from someone who knew already. Still resourceful....-Lazz

I did this in m*** on my car. They did not have ***les prior to 1973. If you can get it back before 73 with the two owners, get a notorized bill of sale from current owner with a statement that he never put it on the road or applied for a ***le. Get a notorized statement from the previous owner that he never had a ***tle and sold it to current owner on whatever date. IMPORTANT...... Go to a small RURAL registry middle of the day, middle of the week when they are not busy. Should not be a problem

My 2 cents is to save yourself the headache and find one with good paperwork. Even if you have to spend a little more it's worth it in the long run.

  17. This is a WIKI I did at the crankshaft coalition site a few years ago. MA actually has a do***ent about what to do when buying a car from an old farmer that has not been run in 20 years. Go to the rgistry and they will tell you what to do. Ask to talk to a supervisor and explain what you want.

    M***achusetts
Went to the RMV to inquire about registering my old car I have had for forty years. This is what they gave me at the Yarmouth RMV:
    [edit] Purchasing an undo***ented vehicle

A customer has purchased an old vehicle for which there is no ***le, proof of ownership, or any other record. It was purchased from a farmer who had the vehicle for the past twenty years and never bother to ***le or register it, The buyer wants to ***le and register this vehicle.
    [edit] Solution:

The SELLER must provide the BUYER with a signed, notarized bill of sale stating the YEAR, MAKE, MODEL, VEHICLE IDENTIFICATION NUMBER (VIN),SELLING PRICE, AND ODOMETER READING, along with an account of how when and from whom the vehicle was acquired, and the cir***stances of where, and to what use the vehicle has been placed during the seller's ownership.
In addition, either the seller or the Buyer will need to have a "Visual Inspection" (TV-7) completed by a law enforcement agency. At the same time, they must obtain a "Stolen Vehicle Inquiry Report" from that agency.
The Buyer must then forward the seller's notarized bill of sale as described above, along with the TV-7, the Stolen Vehicle Inquiry Report from a law enforcement agency, and a completed RMV-1 plus the $50.00 ***le fee, to Auto Theft. Auto Theft will evaluate the information presented, run a check on the vehicle, and if satisfactory, will direct that a ***le be issued and sent to the BUYER. Once the ***le has been received, the BUYER may then register the vehicle.
I am having trouble getting the "Stolen Vehicle Inquiry Report" Since the car is not stolen the cops don't see a need. They told me to do a carfax, but I don't think the RMV will accept that.
Also, If the car is a gift from any member of your immediate family ,you do not have to pay sales tax. And, if you live at the same address or have the same last name the givor does not have to sign.
OK, I did the TV 7 and got the town police to come by and look at the car and sign off on the VIN. We had to use a magnifying gl*** as the original was really worn.. I would make sure your VIN is a good one or find out how to get one. If you don;t have one you can probably use the engine #.
I managed to get a stolen vehicle report run on this car to make sure it was not stolen and got the copy. Had to have this done at the police station. They really needed convincing as they thought why don't the RMV do it .
I then wrote a statement in short clipped sentences stating the whereabouts of the car. Where it had been garaged and what purpose it was being put to during that time.
In my case it was my dads. was in his garage and we worked on it from time to time until he gave it to me.
Therefore no sales tax. I had this statement notarized. I had the RMV-1 notarized. I had the TV7 signed off. I also did a form for antique plates.
Patty at the RMV was really nice and I had been there several times getting all this set up.
Once everything was proper and I got my tags on the spot. I was waiting for a revoke in the mail but instead got my ***le

If you find a registration, bring it with you. Anything that is official and has the name of an owner on it. I think if everyone is in m*** it is easier. Stuff coming from out of state is harder

Even if i cant ***le it i think one good cruise in that's worth a surcharge

  23. You need to at least get enough done to pay the sales tax. If you wait till completed they will charge you interest and compounded it will be a lot if it takes years to finish.
Go to a ford forum and find out where to look for the VIN. When getting the police to check off the vin they don't care if it don't run. Getting them to do the stolen vehicle report was harder. They don't understand why the registry won't doit and niether did I?
Get all the forms at the registry. Get a friendly notary to do the bill of sale.
Nothing will be contested they just want all the paperwork done correctly.
Also, if you have trouble at 1 registry, try another. They are different !

The correct paperwork and your money haha, thanks again ill make sure i try these things

  25. Talk to a lawyer.
Or has someone said earlier a judge.

These no ***le states that use registrations are a royal pita if you don't have a current registration. The DMV staff is likely to give you different stories.

It seems like a majority of you are reinforcing the fact that i should buy it and deal with the pains and h***le of retrieving a ***le. I hope all goes well if i pick up the car pictures will definitely be going in my albums if you wanna check em out! thank you again everyone!

Here is what i do In PA. You need a bill of sale from either Georgia or Alabama. It must be notarized. Just say something like. "I sold by (blank) vin #(blank) to Mr. (Blank) for $(blank) on (blank) date. The Original owner (a.k.a. anyone with a Georgia / Alabama liscence and address) has it notarized and mails it to you. Take that bill of sale to your local ***le place. They will do the paper work and send the bill of sale back to Georgia / Alabama and they will make a NEW ***le for that car. They will then send that new ***le back to your ***le place and they will then transfer it to your DMV who will transfer the Alabama / Georgia ***le into your name with your state. Cost me $80 in PA. Georgia and Alabama both throw away all paper work on anything that has not been registerd in 15 years. Well No **** they wont have any history on the car for 15 years (its never been there). As long as it has also been off the road in your state for a long period of time then your state ***umes that the car was sold and left Your state a long time ago and now its back. Works every time. I do it a lot on cars and Bikes. Lucky for me i have family in both states and the one person has a friend who is a notary. Post a Add on a local Craigslist down south and pay some guy $50 to mail you a notarized bill of sale. Good luck

Right. Except that the OP is in M***achusetts, so what we can do in PA really isn't pertinent and he needs info about his own state.

Not really... the majority of people are answering your question of "how to ***le". You didn't really ask "should I?"

Those are two very different questions.

I bought my '51 un***led, and I'll never do it again. Ever. Papers or no deal. I spent a solid 6 weeks getting the ***le sorted out on my car, and from what I understand, I was just lucky.

Before you do anything- figure out what needs to be done to make it legit.

Oh- and the guy who said buy a salvage ***le and swap vins? I think he's aiming to get sold to bubba for 4 cigarettes and an extra pudding. Don't do that.

So- SHOULD YOU BUY IT? If it were me, I'd keep looking. Your mileage will vary.

Cudos to you for not thinking a grand is a lot of money though.
