+1, almost every one of us either uses them or has used them but they can be a real source of aggravation as that is one more connection in the system where the cable is clamped in the replacement end. I've had to take those apart and clean them as often as I've had to clean the post and end themselves.

Make sure that you have the spot (s) where the ground cable (s) attach to the engine block clean and bare too. I've run into cases where the car owner had the engine all painted up real purdy and didn't want to clean off a spot to bare metal for the ground cable because it would "ruin" his paint job on the engine.

  2. If your going to use a set of jumper cables then it's positive on battery to side lug on solenoid, then another cable from the solenoid to the battery lug on the starter. The neg battery post to the block. You basically using the jumper cables in place of the cables, so they need to be run the same.

If you can order 2 gauge wires from o'rileys then do it (the 4 gauge ****s). I ordered some standard ignition ones from my local parts store.

It's a 12V. I'm finding much of the electric system wasnt upgraded. The solenoid on there was a 3 pronger and the 62 ford f100 is a 4 pronger. :(

Where exactly is the engine ground supposed to connect? And to add this isnt a stock engine( 292 y-block) . All I see is a braided wire from the manifold to the firewall. Should I look somewhere else?

The number of posts on the solenoid isn't an issue if you don't need a resistor byp***. If you need one a new Ford Solenoid is dirt cheap in comparison to most solenoids.
