If you "Build On a Budget", this beefy trans. can be rebuilt very reasonably. I'm putting one in my '36 coupe for less than 25% of what the 4 speed version would cost.
This is a nice and rugged all synchro 3 speed trans. Some of the early 3.03's had an odd synchro ring that is tough tofind. The later ones are generally available. Bearings, gaskets, and seals are no problem. Its a bit tough to rebuild....there isn't much space for all the parts squeezed inside. They can handle some horses!
Pontiac/GM didn't have a 3 speed that could handle the power of the mighty Pontiac V8. So Pontiac went to Ford and bought the 3.03 under the name "Dearborn". They take just as much power as the legendary top loader 4 speed. Tough as nails. And you can convert them to top mount shifter with a Jeep T-150 3 speed cover/shifter assembly. It also happens to have the same gear ratios.
I have one I'd sell (fixed yoke). $215 I also have a '66 Ford F100 T-85 heavy-duty Overdrive trans (4 planetary OD) $550
I had a 65 Skylark Gran Sport 400 (401) with the 3-spd toploader. I drove a 66 Ford Parts truck with the 3 spd top loader but I know they also made a BW with non-synchro 3 speed. So might want to look at Trans or build tag. PS My 71 Mustang had a Saginaw PS, and 72 Torinio had a Harrison Evap core and POA valve.
Does the T85 have the 1-3/8-10 input? I thought the one I saw at a scrap yard had the big input which I thought was strange for a late model OD trans..
Ford used the 1-3/8" input on the close ratio 3 and 4 speed transmissions behind a 390 or larger. The close ratio was also optional on smaller engines in some muscle cars.
