Hey boys, guess what this girl gets to do? My momma just had her "CAR" painted. The painter didn't cut n polish it after painting it. SO my momma asked if I'd do it. I'm a stud like that. No not really. Anyways, how do I finish this dog up so I can get her out of my hair and crawl back into my engine compartment? What do I need? Compounds? Tools? She doesn't trust a detail shop to do it, but she's trusting me. Does it matter that the car is (dum dumduuuuuuuuuum) FIBERGL***? The car only has 2 coats of clear on it, so I don't wanna ruin her ****ty new paint job. Thanx in advance! **x Brandy
Have you ever run a buffer? Done any sanding? What kind of paint? Fibergl*** doen't really matter. Clark
Sure I've done LOTS of sanding. All by hand of course because I'm a weirdo and actually enjoy it. NEVER done buffing. She had the car sprayed in some sort of acrylic colorbase ***same EXACT **** Chevrolet uses for their VICTORY RED paint***. Does that help? **x
I use satins and industrial primers all the time.....but this FANCY **** is new to me. I'm a jerk of all trades. **x
You enjoy sanding? Wanta move to Ga. & marry an old fart? You need to find out exactly what kind of clear & how much - "two coats" can mean anything. If it's two coats of Sikkens you can probably buff it. If it's some cheap **** (& it probably is), you're in trouble already. How much orange peel? Trash? If it's pretty smooth, you may can get by with just hitting the trash specs with some 1500 on a small peice of paint paddle to flatten them, & buffing it out. I use 1000 before buffing, but I doubt you have enough clear to work with to sand the entire car. You might consider sanding with 1000 & having them shoot another coat of clear. Nothing like sanding & buffing a fresh paintjob only to burn through several places (or even one) & having to go back & spot in color & clear again. For this reason I don't like to buff other's work. Once you start buffing, the main thing to remember is the direction the buffer is turning. Lean it slightly & always turn the pad off of the edges. Any ridges you may want to tape with masking tape (I don't do that but I've seen it done). I use a foam pad & 3M "Perfect-It III Rubbing Compound", then polish with another foam pad & 3M "Foam Polising Pad Glaze". They make different foam pads for buffing & polishing. Make sure you wash it afterward to remove all the compound & polish around the edges. Good luck; you'll need it! ~ Paul aka "Tha Driver" I drive way too fast to worry about cholesterol.
I don't post alot but, you should'nt try to buff it , i hate to claim this but i run a crew at Maaco , and we would'nt even send a car like you're describing to a customer.I would take it back and see if the shop will re-clear the car, and thats my opinion ,buffing isn't an easy task.Good luck
I'm not gonna argue with my mom! Would be like yellin at myself.....wouldn't get anywhere. Nah I think I'll let HER do the buffing and when SHE burns thru it, she can yell at him. See I can be taught. Thanks guys. **x
What did this guy charge to bend your mom over ? Sounds like you need to go over there and sand his nuts with some 40 grit ! Pat...
