Im trying to remember Which braces went to which year. I have a 30 coupe and a 28 sedan. The 28 sedan has pressed front fender brackets that are pretty cheesy and rub the tires. I have a set of what looks to be small diameter cast original front bumper brackets but would swear I took them off a 31 some time ago. Are the 28 and 29 front brackets the same and the 30 31's the same? And were they all cast?
Ford switched from the forged brackets to the stamped steel ones in mid 1930. There were a couple variants of each, but for the forged brackets are the earlier ones.
from what i've gathered,28-9 forged ones have the top bolt hole raised somewhat (about 1/4 inch)and the early 30's are all the same height, i'm speaking of the frame mounting holes. someone correct me but aren't 30 31 brackets shaped different as far as the radius in them?
The fender shapes are different so I would imagine the shape of the brace would be as well... I just wasn't sure if the forged ones I have that I took off the 30 are the correct one or not. Thinking they could of been 28 or 29 and bent to fit? Either way the ones on the 28 have to come off and be modified as the edge lip is long and hits the tire if turned sharp. I was thinking about making a spring lifting block about 3/4" thick to lift the car just enough to prevent the scrubbing but think putting the correct fender brace back in might be the answer.
28-29 fender front fender brackets were all forged steel. Early 30s were forged steel as well though different than the 28-29 ones. Later 30s and 31s were stamped steel. There are stamped 28-29 brackets around, old and new, I believe they might be factory service replacements after the forged brackets were discontinued.
I have forged 30/31 fender braces on my Model A. I also have a pair of 28/29 forged fender braces I accidentally picked up at a swap met once. A trick I use is a Carriage bolt through the under side into the headlight bar with a chrome acorn nut on top of the bar. this gives a little more clearance and keeps the bolt head and nut from tearing up your tire.
