Where does one check the trans fluid at? I have a 292 y block with a 3 speed +O. I really should get a manual I know :/
Better to access undernether or go thru tran cover in cab? Also is that the same hole I want to add ****** fluid? It's been sittign 12 years so Im sure it needs some. Thanks!
Yup, should be a plug on the side of the ******. Fill it till it overflows, that's when you know it's full. Posted from the TJJ App for iPhone & iPad
That looks like it. Auto parts stores, good ones, should have a tool to fit a rachet that goes in there. (I hate to call it a socket...)
Oh, And there should be a drain plug on the bottom of the trans, similar looking plug if memory serves.
If that plug is halfway up the side of the case, it's what you're looking for. You can probably turn it with the square drive of a 3/8 ratchet, probably best to get it loose with a breaker bar first.
I said "good" auto parts stores Try NAPA, but after reading halfdozen's post.... Doh! How come my dumb *** never thought of that?
Yep the one on the side, not the one on the top. And I just use a ratchet or if need be, an extension. Never even seen to "Correct Socket" in my 57 years
What kind of fluid do I use? Dont want to ***ume anything. used a 1/2 inch ratchet, no breaker bar needed. Smells Horrible and is green-ish colored??
Yes, 85-90 weight gear oil. BUT! Make sure you also check the overdrive unit fill plug. If trans is low, so is the O.D. Fill the O.D. first, then the trans. Let them sit for 10 minutes, then just top them off. The oil slots between ****** and O.D. unit are very small, so "heavy oil flows slowly." Hey. Say that 4 times, as fast as you can.
LOL! I'm thinking about using engine degreaser to remove grease and cat hair that blew into the grease. Like a coat of cat hair, so nasty. Will the chemical jack anything up? You can't even make out the od unit.
