After running a big ugly GM HEI on my 350 for 5 years, I was looking to put something a bit cooler on the 283 that's going in next. I have a nice Mallory YC 310 with a really nice cap, I'd like to use, but I want it to be as to maintain (meaning I don't want to maintain it) as the HEI. I'd prefer not fiddling with 2 sets of points and condensers on a dark highway on a Sunday night. What suggestions do you have for electronic conversions, coils, & plug wires? What are you running? Rebuilding and re-bushing them? I include this picture so this post can be the go to on the subject.
Pertronix makes a drop in electronic conversion. My buddy has converted several to Chrysler electronic for me. It works like a charm. I save all my used caps (getting hard to find) and use fine bead blasting media to restore them and then a light coat of clear lacquer for the out side to make them look new again. The cap takes the 7mm wire. I use the solid core wire like we did in the 60s and have had no problems with the Chrysler box. Others will disagree. You might talk to GMCbubba. He's the ign. guru.
I have been running one for the last 9 years on my 389 and have not had to touch it. I think it works well with the points. I also had GMC BUBBA on the hamb here convert a chevy distributor to a flathead and change it to electronic for my flathead, he does a nice job.
Clean it up , making sure the advance units are lubed up etc. Then install a pertronixs kit and live happily ever after. Use a 1.5 ohm coil with a 1.5 ohm resistor.
Yep, I'm about to do the same, I have a YC-310-HP distributor going into my '56 Chevy. The YCs use a four lobe cam on the points and I think the Pertronix part number for those is ML-187A. http://www.northernautoparts.com/ProductModelDetail.cfm?ProductModelId=27817
And with eh Ignitor II, you don't have to worry about frying it from leaving the key on or volatge spikes either
I sent my whole mess to Jim at Bubba's. He's doing mine for my 371 Olds now. I have a feeling it will come back to me all pretty and right. The price was very right too. Thanks Jim. Looking forward to seeing your work.--Dale
something that hasn't been mentioned is going with an msd box and using the points to trigger the box. no amperage going through the points to wear them out and if the box fries you disconnect it and run straight through the points again.
I've got a 70's style Mallory dual point on the 440 in my OT Dodge Challenger that triggers a Summit branded Mallory capacitive discharge box and it works great. I opted for the Petronix kit because overall it was cheaper and there were less wires running all over the place than with the CD system.
My Rev Pol has all MSD parts inside, reluctor, etc, uses an MSD Blaster 2 coil with an MSD box. This is on an Ardun 8BA.
I have two yc310hp dizzies with good caps and a couple NOS in box caps that I plan to run with the MSD box because I have them already.
damn you bubba! that thing looks good! do you coat that in anything after you blast it?? kinda looks like in one picture??
Whar's wrong with points? When I was growing up that's all we had and they worked fine. Yeah you have to adjust them, but not every day. Very easy to diagnose, work good, and you can keep a spare set of points and condenser in your glove box. I like electronic ignition and do driveabilty diagnosis on newer vehicles for a living every day. I just don't get it when people say they want to get rid of the points because they don't want to be stuck on the side of the road. Electronic ignition will leave you there too, unless you have a spare module and some tools in the trunk. Ken
well, with the 4 lobe mallory you are at a slight disadvantage. the way I understand it is that you cannot adjust the dwell like you could a normal leading/trailing dual point system. This makes them perfect candidates for a triggered system though. nothing wrong with points though. I have em in my flathead. changed them once in 20 years because I left the ignition on! grrr
I'll take points any day. I've been stuck on the road with the electronic junk to many times. Changed my 74 Power Wagon over to points 20 years ago and have NEVER been stuck since. Sure they take a little maintenance. If they do quit, you can usually jurry rig it and get home. With the electronic stuff, well you're just STUCK. Call a tow truck!!!!!
We glass bead and then clean with "purple power" cleaner from advance auto parts. Let er dry after a warm water rinse and then spray with a clear from ace hardware. Leaves a really nice finish.....
