Hey guys, I have a 68 ford galaxie 500 XL convertible that im building. My parts car is a 68 LTD with a 9 inch, but the convert doesnt have a 9 inch (I dont think so anyway). It has a removable pan on the back, and I dont think the 9 inch had that so thats my reasoning. On the tag it says: W R A (Ford) 3.10 6DD 1 Thats what I think it says anyway, its kinda corroded. There are 10 bolts holding the pan on too if that helps. Anyone know what rearend this is? Is 3.10 the ratio im guessing?
the correct rear end doesnt have the cover, the late 70- 80's lincolns, etc did. My 68 XL has a coil spring style 9", I dont recall ever seeing any full size cars even pre 79 with a cover. I dont know the type of rear that is, I dont deal with them. The 3.10 is most likely the ratio, See if there are any numbers on the carrier, starting with D or E, that would put in the 70-80 range. I would go with the right 9", but thats just me.
yeah, id rather go with the 9 inch too, but my parts car 9 has 2.73 gears, and I think that might be a little too high. got any pics of your XL man?
by the way, the convert with the mystery rear end had a factory 302, maybe only big blocks got 9 inchers?
Iv'e heard that there were some 8" rears with the cover, but still had a dropout 3rd member. could be one of them. doubt you ever seen to many of them tho. the 9" should fit also. measure your spring mounts center to center to see if there the same as the 9". i would bet there the same.
I also am stumped on the back pan model.Dana 60 out of a truck? But Im sure the rear end out of the LTD will be a 9 and 3/8" unit and NOT a 9".Pull the axle and you will find 31 splines. The 9 3/8 chunk is not as strong as a 9".But will work fine for an everyday driver.---Feder
Well I just looked through my list of axles and codes. I did not find the code you posted but I did come up this, WER-A Ford Passenger 1967-69 3.10 ratio 31 tooth ring gear 10 tooth pinion 8 1/2 dia ring gear Non-Locking Non-Removable Carrier This rear really doesn't have much in the way of usablity for a performance application. Also you are going to have a hard time finding parts for it. I think it is a Dana unit.
Don't know about the #'s but I have a 78 granada rearend that is a Ford 8.8 and it has a rear removable cover and it looks real similar to the Dana. Might check to see if it's an 8.8
Even though this thread was started over 10 years ago some of the full sized Fords had a rear end that was not a 9 inch starting around 67,just because its a full sized car does not mean it has a 9 inch so if you are looking at a car to donate the drivetrain look at it first. I bought a 70 galaxie for its 351-w and it had that rear end and I think there were used up to the end of the 9 inch era.
Does this break the record on resurrection? I didn't know the archives even went back that far. That Ford was nearly new back then..
uh, you know that it doesnt matter if this thread is 10 yrs old. I got a Crosley starter from an 8 year old ad.
I had a guy join the HAMB, and PM me about a taillight I had posted a thread in a thread several years earlier. Not quite 8 years though, maybe 3.
That's better than the one that joined just to PM me claiming that he was selling first class parts on Ebay when I stated in a thread that his low priced eEbay parts were Hoffman group junk and that he used Hoffman group photos and adds in his Ebay adds .
