As mentioned the 650 Holley is a good choice. Although the 4100 wont perform as good as the Holley it wont give you as much trouble as the Holley. My .02
Carter 4759s (manual choke). Carter 9627s (electric choke). Carter 9637s (electric choke and EGR port which can be plugged). All of the above are 625 CFM AFB carbs. For the record, I run two of the 4759s (modified) on my modified 390. Jon.
There is no "best" carb for that motor, all you will get when asking this question is what some of our personal favorites are. Some are going to say Edelbrock, some will say Holley, some will say Rochester, and others will say put back the carb that came on it. It all boils down to what each of us have had good luck with. Pick one in about the 600-650 cfm range and you will be fine. Don
Well said Don! And I agree, it is easy to over carb CFM, the forgotten part of the choice is what RPM will it be running at? Cruiser 600 and deep gears, loose converter or stick, big cam, then a 750 or so. Good luck...
I also agree with Don & oldguard. I had a motorcraft 600 cfm in my stock '62 Thunderbird. I had nothing but problems with it. The last straw was when it started leaking gas out of one of the seals and began to catch fire. Having the car as a daily driver, I needed something less explosive and better preforming then that. I bought a Edelbrock 650 cfm with manual chock because I got a really good deal on it and needed something dependable. I never had a problem with it the hold time I owned the car. Good luck kingdesgn
I put a 600cfm holley 1850 list w/electric choke on my 62 galaxie xl 390FE.It goes down the interstate 3 times a week at 70mph no problems
