My 1950 Chevrolet 1 ton truck is leaking oil out of the rear end by the hub. Is there supposed to be a paper gasket in between the hub and where the axle bolts in? I have heard it was supposed to be metal but that doesn't seem like it would work. Thanks for any thoughts or suggestions!
This gasket? https://www.chevsofthe40s.com/detail/6342/Chevrolet_Gasket_Brake_Drum_6_Lug_Front_Or_Rear.html
Not that one but from the exploded picture, it looks like 5.811. Does anyone know if that gasket is made new or do I have to make it? Also, it is 8 lug wheels.
Shouldn't be too hard to make, you could stand the axle shaft on end, flange down on the gasket material, tap it a few times with a mallet and - voila - custom gasket. Also, use a little permatex on the mounting bolts as axle lube can run out there as well.
as Waldo stated, make your own gasket. I do it often by buying a roll of gasket material (I avoid cork) and using a ball peen hammer get the shape and then I punch the holes with a hole punch set that I bought from Harbor Fright (pun intended). Give it a shot, it's easy.
