My 1950 Chevrolet 1 ton truck is leaking oil out of the rear end by the hub. Is there supposed to be a paper gasket in between the hub and where the axle bolts in? I have heard it was supposed to be metal but that doesn't seem like it would work.

Thanks for any thoughts or suggestions!

Not that one but from the exploded picture, it looks like 5.811. Does anyone know if that gasket is made new or do I have to make it? Also, it is 8 lug wheels.

Shouldn't be too hard to make, you could stand the axle shaft on end, flange down on the gasket material, tap it a few times with a mallet and - voila - custom gasket.

Also, use a little permatex on the mounting bolts as axle lube can run out there as well.

as Waldo stated, make your own gasket. I do it often by buying a roll of gasket material (I avoid cork) and using a ball peen hammer get the shape and then I punch the holes with a hole punch set that I bought from Harbor Fright (pun intended).
Give it a shot, it's easy.
