I'd be curious to see some pics of this thing at the autorama, Its a nice car but seems mild to have won an award in 53. But anythings possible I guess.
Blue tinted gl*** was a popular item in the 50's for hot rods.My friend Spike has a 47 Mercury coupe with blue tinted gl*** and has owned the car for 43 years. I don't doubt that it was built a long time ago but in the write up it says the interior is over 50 years old and has what appears to be 55 Pontiac side trim mounted.I suppose it could be but if so that would probably have been the first use of that trim on anything other than an original Pontiac.Whatever the case I like it a lot.
That car was traded to a big Ford dealer in GA for some type of super-rare, early Mustang not long ago. The man that had it also has an original GT-40 that he keeps in a barn - not a storage building full of nice cars, but a real live BARN. Guess that Mustang is in the barn beside it now. A buddy of mine bought it from the Ford dealer not long ago. My buddy sold it to the current owner in CA. I don't know all of its history but I do know that it is a very well preserved, real, early custom. JH
No kidding. I'm starting to think, **** coupes. If you're gonna do a taildragger, why not do a sedan? They're cl***y and cheap at the same time, just like your mom. I like that steering wheel, too.
is it just me, or do the rest of you keep going back to check this thing out closer. I'm really diggin the blue roof...god I love this car....sweet family truckster type build...added another one to the list I need to build.
***WARNING*** if you are thinking about bidding on the car let me or some other HAMBer go look at it. i have been to look at other cars this place had for sale, and they've always been "not quite" what they describe,to put it mildly
George, you beat me to it..... I actually used to work at the place thats selling the car....check out the feedback on the place, all the good stuff is from the cheap BMW/Mercedes Benz buyers, the negative stuff is from people who bought other stuff..... Cowboy's doesn't even BEGIN to describe them....
Car was on eBay a while back. If I'm not remebering wrong it didn't sell then. Sure is a nice car, but it's got a couple of doors to much for my taste. Never did like that hump back trunk. Otherwise a nice piece of history. Pics to be saved as usual. Paul
I like that a lot...one of the nicest 4 doors any of us are likely to see since everyone is coupe crazy. Very nice, smooth, simple car and the use of the poncho trim on the door panels looks awesome. They probably want a lot more money than just about anyone is willing to pay, history or not.
Car was restored by Lee Rockwell here in west Michigan couple of years ago. He knew the original builder in the 50's. Worked for years to buy it and didn't spare any expense putting it back to show condition. Not my style but the workmanship and detail is beautiful.
I saw this car at the Autorama. I remember Leroy Rockwell when I was a kid...he lived across the street from my aunt and uncle on Bellevue SW in Wyoming, MI..he had a Flathead powered Ford, I think a 37 or a 38...Jim Farage rebuilt the engine at his garage in Godwin heights...the wheels weren't the wide five's, he had 40 Ford wheels on that car and it was really nice. I think I was collecting Model A stuff even back then. I thought that Bill Cleland owned this car, at least that's what I heard. (he also lives on the same street where Leroy lived...)
I too saw the car at the original Autorama, and it was in the semi custom cl***. The tinted windows were very popular in Michigan in the early days. Jerry Yatch's Full custom 40 Merc also had the blue tinted windows.
