I have rust pitting, on My wire wheels. Going to strip and re power coat them. Is there a sandable powder coat primer ? Would like to sand blast , and resurface the area before a complete power re coating. I would think, the primer would have to a higher cure temp, as to be stable, for the application of the final powder coat, at a lower cure temp. Googled,sandable/surfaceable power coat primer, with no luck ! .
I've never heard of powder coat primer,,,best thing to do is take the wheels to the guy in your area that does powder coating and get his opinion. HRP
Yes, there is a sandable PC primer. Its called 'KL Primer' Its pink, and your local PC shop should know how to use it. They simply shoot it, let it cool, sand, then shoot color. (or, multiple rounds of KL if required) There might be more sandable PC primers, but KL is the one I'm familiar with. Big blemishes can be filled with lab metal or equivalent PC friendly metal filler. Hope this helps.
Thank you for the perfect solution for my request. After looking in to it, I found there is a replacement KL, it is now call RL. KL is no longer made. bpg_austin Thank you for your time, and effort. Use Zinc primer powder if you have pitting. It will fight against rust better. We use it sometimes to fill in deep pits. Done some 46' Ford bumpers one time, worked good, but we also used a DA on it to sand it. You can also use JB Weld, make sure it's the 24 hour cure, not the 5 min stuff. The 24 hr cure will handle 600 deg. Works great but it's a ***** to sand!
