So, I've got a 49 Dodge special deluxe up here in Canada. Canadian car with the longer block. Of course, just before I move, the water pump went, but the previous owner had a near new one in the trunk. Installed it, and it is too long. Can't put the rad back in with the fan installed! So, Question I have is, is there a different water pump for the longer block Canadian cars? It could be the spare pump that my PO put in the trunk was just the wrong one, maybe from a later model car or something.
How much are you lacking??? There are sometimes some spacers between the fan and the pump flange. Do you have these spacers, will removing them get the fan in? There are also different coolant bypass systems for when the termostat is closed iternal and external. there are some differences between pumps depending on the system. The external system has a large cast iron fitting mounted to the head this holds the stat and has a hose going to a fitting onthe top of the pump with a short section of hose between the fittings. The internal system has a small sheet metal stat housing and no connection to the water pump. The rear backing plate on the internal system is a different piece than the external. You shouldn't need to do this but one of the tricks to putting a long engine in US built cars was to positio the radiator to the front of the mounting bracket which moves it forward an inch or more. Other thing contrbuting might be collapsed rear motor mounts which allow the engine to flop around, see if you can move it toward the firewall. As always pictures would be of good use here.
I've got the external system, and no spacers. I'll post some pics in a bit. Engine mounts are Ok. Thanks for the help.
I think the Canadian dodge folks modified the cars to that effect. I haven't seen an american one yet as I got the car last summer. Attached are some pics. Since the pump that is on the car is nfg, I will be removing it this afternoon and measure it.
