Hey guys have a couple questions, things I'm trying to figure out so please forgive the lack of knowledge.... I have a 30' coupe I'm looking at putting a flathead with 39 transmission in. I'd like to keep the stock A crossmember if possible( ***ume I'll need to modify to mount the 39 transmission. To get around the pedal debacle I was thinking about running the Tardel firewall mount swing pedal ***m. Can I just use a slave to activate the fork on the 39 trans? Any photos/methods to modifying the A crossmember to house the 39 transmisson? Thanks! -Nick
No experience putting a early V8 trans in an A ch***is, but the hydraulic part should not be hard to do. Biggest challenge would be fabbing a mount for the slave cylinder that would have to attach to either some of the bellhousing bolts or the shifter cover bolts. Then you'd need to make a slave cylinder push rod that has a clevis to attach to the Ford clutch release lever. Suggest you take a look at the master and slave setup from a '70s Mazda/Ford Courier pickup. That's what I used with the small block Chevy and T-5 in my '38 Ford pickup, works well. I used a '52-'56 Ford car pedal ***embly because I had it laying around, probably other pedal ***emblies work as well or better. FWIW, the '52-'56 Ford pedal ***embly is the best possible choice for '40-'47 Ford trucks, gave one that I had to a buddy to use in a '46 Ford pickup, fit like it was designed at the factory for it.
I'm doing something different too, I built a manual cross-rod and linkage but don't like seeing the ground through the rod-hole. So I am changing to this and patching holes next. This is what I am trying.. using this compact clutch Master cylinder from speedwaymotors.com , a 91 chevy 1/2 ton truck slave cylinder, and adapters for AN4 stainless braided hose. No clue what kinda fitting there is in the slave cylinder, I picked one up ($19). I thought it was an4 but it is possibly a banjo bolt style. The factory chevy line is seventy bucks. it is a Push type slave cylinder, there is both types available on different cars. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?p=8335631#post8335631 Picture on bottom there, I tried to cut and paste it here, but it came out a screen and half wide and I didn't want to crash your thread.
http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=727426 I saw this on a thread a bit back (6th picture from the top). It looks like a may be an old lockheed cylinder or something. anyway, super clean and easy. it would work great with a hydraulic master cylinder. for the crossmember, you have a ton of options- but they will all involved modifications in some for or another. in addition to being able to bolt up the trans, using the V8 crossmembers is also popular because it adds triangulation to the frame. remember you're going to be doubling or tripling the amount of HP that frame was designed for.
You should check out the pedal mounts intended to be used when installing a '39 trans behind a 4 banger (call Bert's (303) 293-3673). Then use one of their battery box master cylinder mounts (or make one yourself based on their design or one of your own). Charlie Stephens
Im planning on using this set up on the 40 I'm building it should work for yours as well. http://www.google.com/imgres?q=trans+dapt+4149&um=1&hl=en&safe=off&tbo=d&biw=1058&bih=482&tbm=isch&tbnid=x742x4jHjy_3kM:&imgrefurl=http://www.jegs.com/i/Trans-Dapt/969/4149/10002/-1%3FparentProductId%3D1117435&docid=0nCM30TTcjRpSM&imgurl=http://www.jegs.com/images/photos/900/969/969-4149.jpg&w=282&h=300&ei=3katULTMHqq9ywHs6oHQBw&zoom=1&iact=hc&vpx=137&vpy=105&dur=1658&hovh=232&hovw=218&tx=131&ty=111&sig=110005491859957748880&page=1&tbnh=146&tbnw=146&start=0&ndsp=15&ved=1t:429,r:1,s:0,i:88
I ended up locating a tardel '32 style K member for the a frame and a set of repop '32 pedals. The f1 crossmember/modified and '39 pedals seem to work well also
*WARNING* on the Transdapt pedals! Their cheaply made, thin gauge construction. Bought a set and wound up using it as a pattern to build my own. Just a heads up.
Pushing on a swing pedal mounted to the firewall? well on my project, the 11" dump truck clutch, the chevy master cylinder on the firewall? I have to reinforce from the master cylinders to the dash again with X-rods. When I push down on the pedals with my 300lbs, things currently "pop" in the firewall and make noises. Not good. More brackets and reinforcement coming. (then I'll have a tank that weighs 6,000lbs.)
The traditional way and parts. A simple band iron stiffener between the M/cyl bolts and the dash board inside is all that is needed.
