i know you've all seen them, the heavy duty magnets sandwiched between two metal plates that can be used to hold two pieces of metal together at a right angle while you're fabricating or welding stuff together. mine are full of grinding dust and shavings. i got half a dozen slivers just picking one up last night. is there a simple way to remove all the shavings? anybody have any tricks? i thought about spraying them off down at the quarter car wash. or maybe it's just time to toss them and pick up some new ones.
my luck is i'll blow the dust off of one and it will all settle back on the other. those things do act like a dust magnet.
I'm looking for a better way. I just use a wire brush or the wire wheel. Remember to clean your cell phone, The speaker attracts metal shavings. I couldn't believe how much **** was in there.
Duct Tape. Try it, it works great the adhesive bond is stronger than the magnetic bond and they will clean right up
I got grinding **** over mine two nights ago, and my engineer buddy said id never clean em up. Ha, now i can clean em, and i wont tell him how i did it. He he, thanks fellas.
Compressor and air nozzle works great for me. They cost too much to replace just because they are dirty.
...I used to dis***emble them to just get the filings off the magnet, then re***emble them in a clean environment. Now I just keep them in Baggies all the time. To clean the shavings, just remove carefully from the Baggie, shake off the dust/filings/shavings in the garbage (or discard altogether)....easy peasy...
The duct tape idea sounds like a great idea - I guess you'd wanna use the 'weapons-grade stuff' that sticks to everything. Much better trying this first than blowing all the stuff aorund with compressed air, risking getting it in your eyes (even with gl***es), lungs, etc. What a great place this is. Cheers.
A short section of garden hose taped to the end of the shop vac hose will damn-near **** a deer tick off a hound dog.
I use 2 sandwich baggies. As I remove the first one I do so by turning it inside out over the trash can. The second one is there to catch what comes loose and flies back while removing the first one, then the air hose while working with them and prior to putting them back it there bags. The Wizzard
I've been wondering about this for a long time myself. Just trying to wipe the **** off with an old t-shirt is useless.
i just got done digging the last of the splinters out. it's funny how something that small can be so painful.
Use a stronger magnet to remove it. I have a 2"x2" rare earth magnet stuck under the bench that pulls it right off. I keep a piece of thick plastic on the bench so I can remove the metal particles. It also works great for removing metal dust from cell phone speakers.
