I saw the rust on the quarters, and the ground through the hole in it Bart, and just made an ***umption that it extended much further, thus, my opinion. Just out of curiosity, what would you offer the guy?

I thought 1,500 was a good offer for the car. I am going to go back soon and talk to him again. I would much rather trade than pay cash. I got a ton of hay off all my oats from this winter. And for how dry we have been over the past years. It's hard for these old guys to turn down hay.

You can't get hurt with an offer like that and based on how you described it, the owner should be glad to get it. And yes, delivered hay beats having to harvest it yourself. Did it for many years with my grandfather. Let us know how you make out.

OK. Here we go. I finally got out of the shop before the sun went down on Friday. I made it there with just enough time to take a few pictures. I will have to break it down into 3 posts due to the 20 pic per post limit. Let me know what you think. Its pretty rough. In my eyes its nothing more then a good "BUCK" for me to create ALL new panels from scratch. The frame is 75% solid. has a few Thin spots. NO holes that I could find. Motor is gone. has a SBC (paper weight). interior is Wrong. lots of trim missing. Good ***le.

So... whats it worth? im thinking not a penny over $3,000. really don't wanna pay more then 2k now that I have check it over good.

P.S. who can find the wrench? ...

    This isn't a '39 - it's a '38 Standard. The one in Bart's photo is a '39 Standard.

    Thanks.

And Yes $4k is way too much in my mind. He started out at $5k. I Got him down to $4k. but told him I would not pay more then 3. Now that I have seen it.... I don't even want to pay that

  13. I know if I brought it home and ****ed around with it for a day or two to get that surface rust covered up so it doesn't make the rust whiners get their ******* in a bunch I could sell it for $4000 easily. '39 Standard, old hot rod, tri-power intake 283, all there.... it would be gone in a week. It's not like they don't now repop virtually anything you could need for it except the hood and grille.

The key rot spot in these seems to be ahead of the rear axle where the frame starts to kick up, every one I've looked at that's been bad, is bad here.

Like I said, show me where else you can buy one in that shape for the money you want to pay. My buddy will sell you a '40 convertible that the frame is rotted in - but it's going to cost you $9000. When he had a '40 coupe body - just a body - the asking price on THAT was $4000. I forget now how that left, but he had it only about six months and either swapped it for two or three complete cars, or sold it in the $2000 range. And that body needed the entire floors done.

I bought a 38 club coupe in 1980 for $500 that had all the same problem spots as this one. Actually, the one here is in better shape. I had to replace the entire front floor section, rear tailpan, etc. The rear fenders for the 38 are very hard to find, and these are in way better shape than the ones I have.
$500 in 1980 equates to what now? I'd say this is worth the $3000, but not going to be a quick flip.

If your going to try and flip it, i wouldn't pay more than $2k if that. If it was sand blasted and clean a lot more issues would show thereselves and it would be alot worse. You can sell rust buckets if they are the prime years that everbody desires and i agree if this was a 40, $4k would be a steel, but its a 38.

that might be hard to make money on, as much as i like the idea of it getting fixed. it needs everything. i hate to say it but keep looking, you'll need a quick fixer to make money.

I'd pay the 3000, maybe 3500; you have the most critical pieces in pretty good condition. The hood and grille and rear fenders, if you want to have a 38, and a Drake/ carpenter floor would go a long way on that project. If you don't want it, p*** it on to someone else; it deserves to be saved.

If you are trying to flip I would p***. If you are trying to build I would p***. :)
Maybe its because I have been dealing with a lot of rust on my current build...

  21. Can't help but notice no one's been able to show us where you could buy the exact equivalent of that car for the same money, let alone less.

I am gonna try to get him down a little more. I will not pay more then 3k for this car. Your right... I am building it to make money. I will have too much time and materials in this car to make money if I pay anything over 3K. If he is not willing to budge of that 4k Number I will p*** the contact info along in case any H.A.M.B. members are interested it saving it. It would look good sitting in front of my shop.

That frame looks like it has a terrible case of acne. In the shape it's in I would say $1500 tops.

If you can't identify the year of a Ford, I wouldn't get involved in flipping cars....

Buy it and change that 38 standard front sheetmetal out to a 37. That's my plans for this one. Been buying up parts.[IMG]

Lets stick with constructive comments please. When I talked to the guy on the phone he told me it was a 39. When I went to look at the car I never gave it a second thought. Sorry I was off by an entire year. I have stated before I am not a vintage Ford expert...Thats why I am here asking questions.
NO one knows Everything about Every Year make and model of car. I am a builder, fabricator, Welder. I take customers cars and cut them up and make hot rods and race cars for a living. I am damn good at what I do. people pay a lot of money for my work. I have not seen it all. I dont know it all. I am always learning. I will never stop learning. If you think you know it all then your actually an idiot.
I dont know the difference between a 38 and a 39 Ford. I might as well just Close the doors and sell my shop now.
We all start somewhere. There Was a time when you didnt know the difference either.
I like this forum because its full of people looking to help others learn and share ideas.
Keep your negative comments to yourself please.

Thank you to the guys who have informed me that I had the wrong year in a respectful manner. All of your comments have helped me learn and become a better more knowledgeable builder.

I would think there is a very limited market for a '38 standard. Just something to think about if you are going to flip it.

There are not many 38 standards on the road. Most were chopped up into race cars. Who can blame them. In those times they were considered ugly. Some still say they are. I would be leaving mine a 38 if I had all the 38 stuff. But I managed to pick up two 37 Tudors. And one is going to be a doner. The best part on a 38 was the rear fenders. Good 38 coupe fenders bring good money.
