I recently acquired a 32 ford sedan. When I contacted my insurance company they asked what model the car is. when I told them it doesn't have a model name they didn't know what to do. they are insisting on a model because the form asks for one and "sedan" doesn't qualify as a model to them. I don't want to switch insurance companies over this because until now they have been good to me so don't suggest that. I have considered grundy or one of the other classic car insurance companies but I like having all my stuff insured through the same place. So they million dollar question. Does a 32 ford sedan have a model name?

I checked my copy of the "V8 Affair", and it lists them as either:

    Tudor Sedan (Standard)
    Tudor Sedan (Deluxe)

4 cyl was a Model B...V8 was a model 18...but I'm getting the feeling the girl behind the desk is expecting to hear Fairlane or Maverick!:D

They must be sticklers there. My 1932 Ford Coupe is listed as just that with my insurance company. It's even listed that way on the "pink slip".

I would just tell them Model B and be done with it.

  13. I went through that with my model T. Everytime they put "T" in the box it tried to autofill "Thunderbird". For people kindof in the car biz, they arent very with it.

I'd go with 2dr or 4dr. The Vin # is what tells the story. If they won't accept that get a supervisor. I'd suggest a collector car insurance co. (I like Grundy because they are cheaper than the rest) but a Collector car co. will be familiar with old cars.

    Lowcab is right---model "B"

  16. Vicky, standard, EFD (Edsel Ford's Dream), Hell just make something up ya know what they say, "If you can't dazzle 'em with brilliance, baffle 'em with bullshit."

The insurance company obviously doesn't know so it really won't matter as long as it sounds good. They are supposed to be able to get all the info from the registration number.

I insured an old Ford once and told the agent that it had a banger in it. He called me the next day and said nope it was a V-8 car and if it did have a banger in it he still had to insure it as a V-8 car.

  17. Wonder why is everybody suggesting "Model B", they also made V-8 "Model 18's" in '32.

  18. B if it's a 4 cylinder,,,18 if it's a V8,,but tudor or fourdoor should be sufficient. .HRP

"when I told them it doesn't have a model name they didn't know what to do. they are insisting on a model because the form asks for one and "sedan" doesn't qualify as a model to them."

When I get the answer "we don't know what to do", I always ask to be escalated to the next level for help (from someone that knows what to do), even if it means they will have to call me back. You shouldn't be running around for answers to get their tasks accomplished in order to give them your $$$.
You're dealing with an entry level clerk trying to fill out a form with drop-downs.

From the catalog, total Ford nomenclature is B-55 (the body type number) Standard/De Luxe Tudor sedan, everything spelled thus. I believe sales catalog, parts book, posters in showroom, etc. would have used that.
If Standard or De Luxe is unclear, look for cowl light holes.
Car's number is strictly the engine serial designating nothing but 4 or V8 and the number it filled in the total production series...the serial carries nothing that would identify what the engine went into aside from extra letters to ID heavy truck application. None of the other information carried in modern VIN's is in there...it is simply the Xth engine of its type to leave the Rouge.

In California both my 3W and Roadster are registered as 2-doors. My original pink slips stated 3W DeLuxe Coupe and Roadster as the description. Ford had specific model numbers for the various body styles, the 3W was a 520. Check with the Ford Barn or restoration sites for the sedan numbers.

  22. I have heard of the Model B with a flathead as a model V ... dunno the story behind it. I like P&B'ners approach ... call it the "All-Steel".

  23. What does the title say?

It should be as easy as this . Check your frame number . It should be on the title . It will either start with an 18-( V8 car) or a B- (4cyl car) . Is it a Tudor or a Fordor ? ( those are correct Ford spellings) Tudor and Fordor designates it as a sedan . Thats it .
Here's the simple options that should be easy for the insurance company:

    Model B Tudor
    Model 18 Tudor
    Model B Fordor
    Model 18 Fordor

    Easy peasy !!!!!

And in that case I would be looking elsewhere. Mine simply says 1932 Ford Sedan.

As Bruce mentioned, 55 is body model for a "Tudor Sedan". A "Fordor Sedan" is a body model 160. The "Convertible Sedan" was a model 400. That's all the "Sedans".

  29. What i don't understand is, you buy a 1932 Ford and don't know that they were called Model B or V-8 type 18
