It seems that I have to have a project going at all times. Here's the start on the old Chevy pickup. Grind off that old paint and rust. Whoa.... look at all of that shiny metal under the crud. A little Metal Prep and some green Etching Primer and it will keep until the body work gets started. Now lets tear down that old GMC parts truck. Fill up the trash can with old wood, rusty bolts, and junk that was in the bed, and stash the sheet metal in the backyard to await paint strip and de-rust work. It's a dirty job, but someone has to do it. A really sick person that got his nick name by being a messy worker will have to be the one to save the old truck. There's nothing nastier than an old truck bed that has been used as a **** can for the last twenty years in a junkyard, except the inside of a Ford flathead of course. pigpen
Looks like it'll be a cool truck when you're done. Say, seeing that fresh metal on the hood gave me an expensive idea - while you got it apart why not just have the whole thing chromed? You don't see that everyday. Looks good, keep them pics coming.
looks like a solid start Pigpen,,, Mike,,, dont give em any ideas ... altho a chromed PU would be kinda killer
I don't know pigpen, everything you do ends up looking pretty clean.. but I guess you are pretty dirty at the end of the day, it's gotta go somewhere right
I am usually really dirty at the end of the day, from grinding on the rusty junk. As hot and humid as it's been lately, I'm also very sweaty and the wife complains about a certian "Monkey Man" odor emanating from the general area where I'm standing. I tell her, "I don't smell nothing" and "I'll take a good shower tomorrow." She then insists that I get into the "Rain Locker" post haste, on pain of being cut off. So I go. We call it "The Barter System". pigpen
I'm using a 4 1/2 in. grinder with a wheel that looks like a porous piece of pumice. It is made especially for removing old paint and rust. Lowes has them in the tool dept. I'll grind out the dents that can't be bumped out due to a double panel with 36 grit prior to using the All Metal filler. (P.S. All Metal doesn't like to go over metal that has been treated with Metal Prep. Just use the All Metal filler over freshly roughed up sheet metal and Metal Prep everything else that's going to get primed.) pigpen
I'm striving to get the old truck as nice as yours, only in baby blue with chrome wheels and blackwalls. Not too nice though, I want to drive it! pigpen
Hey Pigpen You Should See The Other Side. Ill Post Pics When I Get Around To Working On It. That Was The Good Side From The Sidewalk. Some Girl Was Playing W/ Alittle Dog On Her Lap And Side Swiped The Whole Thing. Ive Already Got All The Pieces Just Need To Take Everything Off And Realign. No Frame Damage Though. Keep Me Posted
Pigpen, what are you using to grind off the rust? An angle grinder? flapper wheels? wire wheels? The more exact the better, I've got a similar project awaiting de-rusting... I was planning on beadblasting it, but I may attempt doing a panel or two myself. Thanks! Ben <edit> Whoops, question already answered above... thanks! </edit>
I've got a cheapy 4-1/2" grinder, that I've had to replace once, and it looks/sounds like it's going bad again... what brand do you have, and are you happy? Thanks, Ben
Ben i got two of em, one is an elcheapo Northern tools job that has about 200+ hours on it with the original set of brushes in it,,, pisses and moans a little but still going strong. second one is a McCullough grinder i got from Fleet Farm last year. like it a lot. i keep a cutoff in the MC grinder and a grinding wheel in the NT one. BOTH of em make me smile
Hrm. I must have the REALLY cheap Northern tool grinder then... I was thinking about springing for a DeWalt or something... probably not a bad idea, but then, I've only gone through one of these grinders in a year, and was able to return it (had receipt, and has a 'lifetime' warranty)... they kinda rolled their eyes, but what the heck! Ben
I have a cheapie one from Harbor Freight, on sale for like 12 bucks. It doesn't have a "dead man" switch so you have to be real careful. It has lots of gear noise and if I remember right, I had to take the first one back for a replacement because of bad gears. The second one had the side handle break off but I think it's out of warranty now. Always get the extra warranty at Harbor Freight. The other one that I have is a Sears which is a more quality tool. The lock ****on broke early in it's life but that's the only problem I've had with it. It's hard to find good quality power tools anymore. The good news is that the junk is getting cheaper all the time. It's just a PITA to have to run and get another one so often. It seems that we are living in a Chinese rice and egg roll world now. Cheap, fast, and expendable. (Much like my last girlfriend in Thailand) pigpen
isnt there a saying like that about chinese tools? something like,,, chinese tools are great, but you need a new one in an hour?.. oh wait thats chinese take out... my bad
I dated a chinese girl in college. I was always ***** 30 minutes after *** though. Nice truck pigpen. Gotta love the Advance Design Chevy trucks. Tim
Funny thing. It was the same way in Thailland. Of course, after thirty or forty days at sea I was sporting a big ol' rack of horns. I wore them proudly though, and found a sweet young thing to cure that nagging ailment. My buddy Hog Belly was jealous. He called me a prevert. I ignored him. pigpen "And that's the way it was, movin' west." (Wagon Train)
