to use on my old car junk. I could tell before I bought that it would need an overhaul.I started looking for parts and cannot find anything on the internet. Is anyone familiar with "Hercules" air compressors? The only tag I find on the pump simply says Hercules...5HP.....Louisville Kentucky. Can anyone shed any light on this thing for me, or where to look for parts? Thanks!

Well now I guess I have forgotten how to post pics.

Check out the Garage Journal. They have a forum that deals with old shop tools, specifically. You'll probably get the info you need- good luck wit it.

Why does it need an overhaul? If it's not been run out of oil not much goes wrong with compressor except for the reed valves. Have you taken it apart? What does it need? For sure any compressor shop you call will tell you it's junk, you need a new one.

    More details please. Joe H

  6. I have a couple of old ones. They are easy to mess with. Pull it apart, and hot rod it. Lol. Any chance of a few pics? That would help.

  7. I recently picked up an OLD IR 5hp V-twin compressor with a newer Leeson motor. Mfg date on the tank is 1948! Same exact pump they are using to this day. $200 vs. $2100 for a new one.

Never heard of the Hercules, but I doubt it's junk.

Not sure on the motor. I will have to clean the plate better tomorrow. I think I could make out "DOERR".

I am aware of Hercules engines, but never thought of them making compressors. I guess it could be off a truck, though it seems bigger than what a truck would have.

We think alike! LOL I paid $175. and much prefer to rebuild antique cast iron stuff than buy new stuff that has a predetermined life span.

I work for a compressor company. If you can find a model and serial number I can probably find just about any part you need.

It pumps up and cycles out fine. But it has some oil in the lines and not as much compression as it should have. I think the only way the oil could get there is p*** by the rings. I also think the bottom end is noisier than it should be. And yep, the shops would call it junk, but I prefer old stuff. And once put in good condition, it should last as long as I ever need one.

Yeah, I hadn't even thought of the pulley size. It does need to be much smaller. I'll see if I can find something more suitable.

Its a 1725, though it doesn't sound terribly fast. I probably need to address that before I run it too much. Though there is no telling how long it has been set up this way.

I suspect your theory is 100% correct. That is why I want to find parts to get rings and bearings before I set it up in a permanent place. But I am still finding absolutely nothing on the internet regarding Hercules compressors. I am going to go into the garagejounal as someone suggested and see if anyone there is familiar with it.
