although the pump in question is not really "HAMB" , the application is (or will be) I need to change this over to a V-belt. How the heck does the pulley come off this '94 Cavalier pump ? The pump shaft had a partial threaded hole that I cleaned up with a 3/8-24 tap (wasn't metric) without too much difficulty, but that doesn't seem to have a bearing on how the pulley is attached. At first I thought I could see something like an internal hex or a Star recess in the shaft; but after digging around in there, found that there wasn't. The "hub" in front has a neck or reduced diameter that looks like it could be used with a puller. (?) However, there wasn't any bolt in that partially threaded hole to hold it on. Is this just a press-fit? Is there a special removal tool?
Yup...your napa dealer has a "power steering pulley puller" for a fair price. I use mine a few times every year. The threaded hole is to use when installing the new pulley and also using that puller to install the new pulley.
The threaded hole is used with a bolt, nut, and washer to INSTALL the pulley. I have a rebuilt pump sitting here for my truck that I've got to install. The instructions for it say, "use a suitable puller", to remove the pulley, and they include a bolt, nut, and washer that's used to install the pulley. There is a recessed ring towards the end of the pulley boss that the puller jaws grip onto. Butch/56sedandelivery.
The infamous Harbor Freight power steering pump pulley puller. Yeah, I'm aware it's HF basura but how many times will you actually use it, in your life.........5? For $20 you can't beat having it in your toolbox for when the need arises! And, it works! I've used mine 3 times. I'll either get 2 more uses outta it or I'll die.........whichever comes first! http://www.harborfreight.com/pulley-remover-and-installer-set-40749.html
thanks for all the info/suggestions got a 20% off HF coupon, so that may not be too bad a deal and after one or two uses, it'll probably end up on "the estate sale"
Got the HB pulley puller kit last week. Made it very easy to get the pulley off. Served the purpose. Now, anyone know if or what V-belt pulley would go onto this '94 Cav (GM) pump in place of the poly-v ? Would an earlier year V-belt type fit it? The shaft is 0.750
After thinking, fighting, and arguing with any part of a car for an hour, a day, or a week, remember this. The guy in the assembly plant put it together in less than 30 seconds.
oval track power steering pumps are based off the cavalier / s10 pump.. speedway sells v belt pulley for them.. Dave
Got me one of the PSPPP's from an auto supply house back in the early 90's. $60 for the puller and installer together, but man did they do the job!
From looking up the pump shaft seal on the pump for my 71 GMC I have to believe that most GM power steering pumps have a .75 diameter pump shaft. http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/d...=Search_02863_1042490_4398&pt=02863&ppt=C0031 I think you are good with any GM press on pulley that is the right diameter, correct offset and takes the right V belt.
That just makes it more depressing. Especially when some of your difficulties are related to decisions made for cost or ease of manufacturing.
Stopped at Speedway, their V-pulley has a 0.660 inside diameter. Thought about buying one and boring it out, but decided not to for now. May end up getting it if all other sources come up empty. Live-chatted with a rep from Dorman this evening They don't have a V-belt pulley.....only the poly-v (serpentine) stock replacement; their p/n RB300131 Have yet to try Classic & Alan Grove. I did pick up a seal kit for the pump at NAPA. was less than $13. If you wanted only the shaft seal ...........it was $17.
thanks for the info, gimpy.........I'll order one of those 300-122 pulleys from Summit. I don't quite understand why that guy told me they didn't have a V-belt one. Coulda been that when I clicked on the live-chat button, I got connected with Auto Parts Warehouse; evidently not Dorman's Or, that "Bruce" the chat guy mighta been from India....who knows
All of the time, I get "that doesn't exist", "nobody makes that", and "we don't carry that", in regards to what I am holding in my hand, often with the packaging, from said supplier, present and intact.
