Well I did something I said I would never do, I sold my 32 five window...And like many being sold these days, It is going overseas where people have money. It was a very painful decision for me. But taking care of my family always comes first. When I first got into this business I knew it would have its ups and downs, But lately it has been mostly down (or so it seems) But hopefully all is not lost, As I was able to pay some bills and invest a little in growing my little speedshop. I have a Brand new website and online store that will be luanched in a few weeks, And every member here will get 10% off of their purchases through june and july. Bottomline is we are all in the same boat here, And saving a buck where we can really matters in todays economy. So I will support the ones who support me with the best discounts I can. Man that sounded like a sale pitch....LOL But all joking aside, I love what I do and love helping guys get what they need to build their hot rod. So give me a call 816-365-2136 if I can be of any help to any of you, And check out my new site in a couple of weeks at www.cowtownspeedshop.com pay no mind to the one that is up right now as it is ****ola!!...LOL. One thing that made me feel a little better about seeing my car go Bye Bye, was the new owner is not going to change much on it, just enjoy it he said.

  9. Good Luck with the new shop...I'll be checkin out the website and add yourself to the Alliance vendor list..

If at all possible? and before you spend all of your 32 $$$$....look around and pick up something cheeep? A body or a frame, and stick it in the corner. Then as time and $$ are your friend again...start to build another car or truck (with the shop name on it?) and write it all off to the business. What better way to promote your business and get you that lost Hot Rod back and on the road again......

Good for you, sir! I know the pain of having to sell a car you love, my '32 Phaeton payed for my daughter's sophomore year at Bryant College but doing the right thing for your family is always the path to follow. As a young guy going to Auto Tech school, I went home for a weekend with a cl***mate. This was early 60s. I got to see a roadster that was in a lot of magazines and has even been featured here on the HAMB so I won't go into location or description. Car was enshrined in a garage that was spotless, on a clean floor, and was indeed a beautiful hot rod of the period. But I couldn't help but notice the house near the garage where a some children sat in ragged clothes on a step of a house in need of paint and repair. It was clear in that instance that the car was the focus of that breadwinner, not the upkeep of a home or family. I went home and discussed this with my old man, he was from SE Tenn, and he reinforced the principle of family before toys which I have practiced and past along to my kids.
One more example as long as I am sharing here. I was helping a guy clean out a barn full of parts and came upon a Dr. Pepper cooler. I set it aside only to have the guy's wife adamantly tell me to toss it into the dumpster. Seems the fellow used to drive supermodifieds and the cooler went to the races with the family every week. "He hears the crowd still every time he lifts the lid on that cooler" she remarked, describing a life that revolved seven nights a week either preparing for that week's race or putting the car back in racing form for next week, no time left for family.
You chose the right option and while it might "smart" a bit now, when you get to your seventh decade on this side of the gr*** like me, you'll feel pretty good about it!

  11. I hope it all turns round for you and before long you're back in a hotrod. Best of luck.

It's hard to get them go but sometimes you just have to bite the bullet and sell,,fortunately you found a buyer and like a lot of hot rods being sold,,to a over seas buyer.

My old 4 door ended up in Japan. HRP

I think you will find that most of us on here have had to sell off some of the toys we loved to keep a roof over our family's head and food on the table at one time or another. I've done it more times than I can count, but another car will come along and the pain of selling the first one becomes only a fleeting memory.

You did the right thing, now focus 100% on making that extra money grow your business. Let me give you two words of advice.....INTERNET SALES. It is definitely the way future business will be conducted and even huge companies that traditionally had brick and mortar stores are now realizing that they need to become strong on the internet or they will continue to see less profits.

    Good luck with your future.

As much as it must hurt, you have a great at***ude and priorities.

Best of luck with the shop and new web site. And 32 Fords? They seem to find one everyday on here, you will get another one!!

Through most of my decades in this biz, the cars I did, the ones I really love, I went without. It's the nature of choosing this as a craft. Eventually you'll come to resent those with, but take heed not to embrace it. For me that lasted a few weeks and I got over it. Paying bills will do that for ya. I'm just now driving something, FINALLY, and yet it's nowhere near what I want it to be or what it could be. Don't know if you have employees, I don't. Being a solo act craftsman is grossly over rated. In time I'll offer a very limited service and build cars for me. I can't stand the project management any longer. Thankless, no pay, no support, 1st finger points at you, taken for granted you signed up for it. After this one, DONE!! I have several peripheral skills that also pay well, go fast, and best of all eat little shop space. This is one of the toughest business models extant. All of your income is based on others DISPOSABLE income. Nobody NEEDS any of this. Not one thing we find here, with the exception of a talent that applies elsewhere, nothing on the entire HAMB is essential. You're still at it. That says something, right? Wish ya all the best bud...

Best of luck to you, grownup decisions are the hardest.. Just start a car fund and build another, and hopefully by time you have enough cash, they won't all be over seas.

I launched my business 5 years ago, the first year was a little tough and I decided to sell my first ever rod, a steel '29 highboy. My wife was not happy... she wanted me to keep it etc but I knew it was the right thing to do.

Anyway, roll forward 4 years and I have 4 toys in the garage now. Selling the one back then allowed me to put some cash into a business which is now fast growing. You will look back and see this as a wise decision, and hopefully soon.

    Best of luck.

Sounds like the right move to me, and add me to the "Been there done that" list. Selling a car to cover debt sure feels good, and before long another project will take its place. Bob

Bittersweet for sure, but family comes first. Stay positive and things will pick up!
As someone mentioned, try to salt away a few grand to invest in an A body, etc. to stash away for yourself. It'l1 make you feel a bit better and give you something to look forward to.

I'm another been there done that after I sold my 51 Merc coupe about 15 years ago. I needed money for a place to live and the guy who bought the car and still has it (finished, driven and kept in a garage) had a big stack of 100 dollar bills.

When one goes away it opens the door for the next project though so all isn't lost. There is always "that" car that a guy has in the back of his brain that he wants to build but has so far found reasons not to.
