Tonight, a special run. We are heading down to Virginia to visit my Mother and go to my Father's grave at Arlington...commissioned USMC in 1943 at age 19. My Mother WORSHIPS Johnny's buttermilk, and we swing way out west and pick up 4 gallons of the nasty looking stuff every trip down! The Hot dogs are good too, but very salty...Chihuahua drank about his own weight in water after downing a couple!
Been stopping there for almost 50 years. Not the greatest hot dogs in the world, but the fact that it's still the same for all these years is what really matters. Birch Beer in a frosted mug = priceless.
I live about 10 minutes from Hot Dog Johnny's. This lace is a perfect example of what is so great about the USA. You can take a piece of meat that has been sitting in a bucket of hot water for who knows how long, throw it on a stale bun, serve it with greasy fries and a mug of root beer, (or some nasty shit they call buttermilk), and you can be rich. Its amazing.....all they serve is hot dogs, fries, and root beer, and you can't get near the place on the weekends.
RUTTS HUTT -RIPPERS AND SURLY service no kraut and you have to buy a cup of chili and dump it on yourself a jersey classic
New Jersey...the greatest place for dangerous food this side of the Pacific! We are a national treasure! My dogs and I are never bored as we pillage Joisey for interesting food!
A lot of people rave about Hotdog Johnnys but I really wasn't impressed. Very salty and rather small dogs. Fries are good though.
I grew up in NJ just north of Newark. Had to leave in the 1970's with the cops one step behind me.... Rutts Hut,Three Acres ,boiled hot dogs with peppers and onions sold from the converted step vans ,a million corner pizza joints and shit hole bars and restaurants,Jersey Shore greasy spoons. The best shitty food in the world!
Nobody has mentioned Newark style Italian Hot Dogs yet? Sheesh. Oh yeah... Rutts Hut. It's a legend for a reason. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
Anyone remember Johnnie & Hanges in Paterson (now in Fair Lawn)? Or The Texan on Rt. 23 in Wayne? Or The Adventurer on Rt. 21?

How about Greasy Tony's in New Brunswick?? Aptly named...nastiest burgers and stuff anywhere, staff of retarded hoodlums stuck in the eighth grade detention center, bathroom decorated with Hustler centerfolds...gack. Disappeared years ago. Probably the Health department called up his mother and ratted him out...
Greasy Tony's was owned by a N.B. cop. They brought the hot wing "fad" to N.B. Their atomic level wings would bring you to your knees. After G.T.'s closed, in the late '80's-'90's, there was a place called The Steak Out. It was located next to the Melody Bar. You guessed it, also owned by one of N.B.'s finest. Great cheese fries and even better cheese steaks. One of my all time favorite burger joints is The White Rose System in Edison/Highland Park. The "system" part has two meanings: 1st part of the system was the way the cooked your burger so quickly. Simular to the idea of Pat's Steaks in Philly with a large pile of meating simmering on low heat just ready to get thrown onto the hot griddle. 2nd part of the system was the use to employ anyone who was recently released from Rahway State Pen. Some of those dudes were pretty rough looking. Their toughness helped to keep the drunken crowd down to a low roar though.
Passed Hot Rods Hot Dogs many times on the way to Island Dragway but never stopped. Now that Island Dragway is closed, maybe I never will ???? Did Johnny ever own a hot rod or just a Hot Dog ???
Hot Rods Hot Dogs is owned by Rod Heft. If you go in, the walls are covered with racing photos mostly from Flemington Speedway and other local dirt tracks. Mostly a burger and dog joint. Foods alright, certainly not worth a special trip though.
