So I just bought some beautiful 2" chrome side lake pipes to shoot down the sides of my 56 BelAir. I love the look when I hold it up, but.......

HOW DO I HOOK IT UP (so it stays on the side)?

I dont want to use chrome clamps, should I weld to the back?

I've never done these pipes before and I am a novice mechanic....
    please help me

    Semper......:D

ya but i didn't want a giant clamp on the pipes, I know some show cars dont have the clamps, i am just wondering how they do it

  4. Are there no tabs on the back side ?
Just a smooth chrome pipe ?

  5. I've always welded three tabs to the pipes and bolted them to the body . Never had dummy pipes always hooked up and never a muffler

If you weld be careful to not blue the chrome. If you're not hooking them up, you can make strong L brackets and bolt them to the back side.

  7. Huh?
You'll need to grind the chrome plating off where you weld

  8. 9 out of 10 cars with lake pipes use the supplied chrome clamps. If you got quality pipes, you got quality looking clamps.

the pipes were pretty expensive, but no clamps came with it.

So I have to grind off Chrome to weld?
Thanks Vicki, I learn something new everyday (not sarcasm)

Grind a small spot on the back and weld a bracket to it. its hidden under the car and looks clean. Thats how everyone I know does it.

thanks Greaser, i figured there had to be some welding but I wanted to make sure that's the best way, thanks Guys!!!!

  12. I've never seen a clamp that looked right. I've never ground off chrome on the back side, just weld L brackets and shoot a little silver paint to keep the welds from rusting and bolt them to the body.
If they were on a show car with mirrors under the car maybe this wouldn't be the best option. I've always made them the lowest part on the car and used them as skid plates to protect my trans pan
also never had and never will have bags. once you've learned to drive a slammed car, you will realize it's a different life style than those who lay frame at a show to TRY to look cool
not that anythings wrong with that, everyone should build them the way they like. I just have my way and enjoy cruising low and slow. kinda like puttin' on a hog
