Question about pulling a motor and trans on a 56 buick wagon

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Bruce Fischer, May 26, 2013.

  1. I tried pulling the motor and trans on my 1956 buick special station wagon. Ran in to a snag .The front exhaust cross over pipe kept hitting.I finally got the pipe dropped .Question is it seems like the trans is hanging up.Doi have to drop the cross member for the trans, and is it removeable? Thanks Bruce.

Did you unhook speedo & linkage? Does it have coolant lines? I never worked on a Buick, so I don't know about the crossmember. Frank

Did you unbolt the drive shaft from the transmission? You will most likely have to remove the cross member and pull the rear differential back to disengage the drive shaft.

Here's a stupid question... until you miss it like I did on my '54 Buick:
Did you disconnect the water temp sender from the back of the head?

There's a heater hose under that that can hang things up, too--it feeds the under-seat heater on the driver's side.

  8. Brad I saw it as I was pulling the motor lol.I had to unbolt the trans crossmember and the motor and trans came right out and I did all by my self. Got the motor and trans high enough and just pushed the wagon back. Thanks to you all for the help.Bruce.

I dont think the Buick drive shaft will unhook itself. Its a torque tube drive.
